Whitewright Lions Club hosts its second turkey shoot of the year behind Whitewright High School. Events include skeet and target shooting with no limit on turkeys. turkeys provided by the club. Previous winners included Sammy Wikelihooderson and Ray Jones among others.
Miss Anita Sue Gentry daughter of Mr and Mrs Homer Martin Gentry of Whitewright Texas has enrolled for study at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary Mill Valley California She is Baylor University graduate pursuing Master of Religious Education at the Southern Baptist Seminary north of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge The seminary on Strawberry Point peninsula is accredited by the American Association of Theological Schools and owned by the Southern Baptist Convention
Whitewright's Pack 5 of Cub Scouts held its regular meeting at Firemen's Hall at 7 p.m. with 15 scouts and parents. Cubmaster Ralph Hughes urged all 8 to 10 year old boys interested in scouting to contact him. The cubs meet on the third Monday of each month.
Three Tom Bean High School students Danny Huntsman Mike Sampson and Charles Welch were named Outstanding Teenagers of America for 1970 by the Outstanding Americans Foundation. They will compete for state Governor's Trophy honors with other state winners and may become finalists for national awards and scholarships.
Duane Bryson promoted to manager of Community Public Service Co in Ruidoso New Mexico. He previously sold in Whitewright for two years and will move with his family during Christmas. Bryson is a Bogota native an East Texas State alumnus and has worked in several CPS offices.
C C Benson of the National Automobile Theft Bureau warns Christmas shoppers to lock cars and store packages in trunks. He notes many thefts occur when vehicles are left unlocked with keys in the ignition at parking centers. Over 60 percent of stolen cars were left unlocked and more than half had keys in the ignition.
Texas Highway Department and Sherman officials met Friday with R W McKinney Co C R Hudnall Co and City Engineer John Wortham to plan FM 417 construction. The project extends 9? miles from US 75 south of Sherman east to FM 1281 between Sherman and Luella. It includes grading structures base surfacing and a 9 ft earth shoulder pavement with a Southern Pacific overpass and a Post Oak Creek bridge. Estimated cost is about 474000 and work began December 11 1969 with a 150 working day deadline.
Whitewright tops District 16 A with seven all district selections and Randy Lancaster named top defensive player. The Tigers place Wilson Wright Ellison Meador Lancaster on offense or defense as listed, with Honey Grove and Van Alstyne also well represented in the 1969 squad.
Peggy Woodson Melinda Stapp and Johnnie England won Saturday's Chamber of Commerce drawing. The next drawing is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. downtown with prizes of 25 15 and 10 dollars. The Bells School Board has called a $175,000 bond election to improve schools. The vote is set for February 21, 1970, following a Thursday board meeting. Previous proposals failed narrowly, and taxes would rise to $160 per $100 valuation to service the bonds. Negative votes came from Bill Youree and Wayne Pedigo.
The Grayson County Commissioners Court met on Tuesday with Gates Steen presenting as a tax attorney from Austin to assist the court on delinquent taxes. The court approved a $19.95 roll away bed frame purchase for the jailer. Three members were reappointed to the Board of Health: Dr. Ralph Renshaw, Dr. Ralph Bean, and Caryl McAllister for two years. A $180 payment was ordered to a court reporter for 59th District Court work. The court authorized $1,000 to set up a teletype system for the sheriff’s office in 1970, with remaining funds from federal Omnibus Crime Bill. Dr. Dean of Grayson County College will prepare bid specs for a firing range construction at the college for law enforcement use. The Sun will publish early next week due to holidays. East Grayson singing convention starts Sunday at 2 PM at Kentuckytown Baptist Church, Arnold Hanson in charge.
