President Roosevelt announced he would ask Congress to lift restrictions on about 600 000 small planters bound by the Bank head cotton control act while maintaining production control as a government policy to reduce the cotton surplus to near prewar levels after several crops.
Washington reports that the Agricultural Adjustment Administration will back an amendment to exempt two bale farmers from the Bankhead cotton act. Senator Bankhead and Secretary Wallace announced the change to ease small producers concerns and improve base production. The plan includes a statewide base adjustment and an appeal mechanism for growers challenging county committee decisions.
Rosedale Cemetery in Gladewater now houses an oil well drilled by Circle Oil Company after owners signed consent. The cemetery operates financially on its own, with profits staying in the fund. It is one mile east of Gladewater, surrounded by a rock wall and tall pines, without any wells passing beneath graves.
The Whitewright Rotary Club will entertain the Garland Rotary Club Friday night at the Presbyterian Church basement. About 100 Rotarians and spouses expected. Miss Gladys Ray directs singing. Dr. F. D. Layman chairs the program. the district governor will attend and speak. Garland receives the attendance cup, Garland’s second win and Whitewright’s prior victory.
Miss Monabelle Biggerstaff a freshman at East Texas State Teachers College Commerce travels to Winfield Kansas with two teammates to represent the school in a debate tournament. The college pays all travel expenses for the 500 mile trip and they return Sunday evening. Biggerstaff was valedictorian of Whitewright High School class of 1934 and is daughter of Mr and Mrs A L Biggerstaff. She belonged to the dramatic and debate clubs and won first in girls extemporaneous speech at the county interscholastic league meet last spring.
Washington reports near completion of a 30 million dollar cotton barter with Germany approved by the Hitler government. The deal would move 500000 to 800000 bales of U S cotton in exchange for German goods including nitrates and pork products, with the Export-Import Bank handling dollars and marks in a barter arrangement.
D R Huffaker of Whitesboro urged Grayson County commissioners to hold an election on a $500000 bond for a new county building. He promised to present a petition signed by 800 real estate holders before December 15. Court debated election feasibility and jail conditions while estimating election and bond costs and potential warrants.
A special venire of 120 will be called December 13 to try D M Duff Hood and Carl Hood in Fifty Ninth District Court Judge F E Wilcox announced. Each faces four armed robbery counts and one burglary count with first trial for robbery with firearms. Claude Boothman and Nat Birge are counsel. The Hoods were held in Lamar County jail Paris by federal officers and remain in federal custody. Federal Judge Randolph Bryant granted permission to try them in Grayson County but delayed sentencing until after district court trial. Both Hoods pleaded guilty to violation of the Federal motor vehicle act last week.
Car owners may delay buying 1935 tags until April 1, with plates on sale Feb 1 in Grayson County. Two month extension to obtain plates, but they cannot be attached before April 1. New model lull and used car slowdown noted. Huntsville prison labor to manufacture plates for the first time.
Sherman Texas. Judge F E Wilcox of the Fifty Ninth District Court completed an eighteen week term in McKinney and opened court in Sherman reporting ninety six criminal cases tried in Collin County during the September term with ninety one convictions. W C Dowdy is district attorney and Leon C Moses his assistant.
A tabloid style paper using only 900 common English words is being rolled out in factories prisons night schools and other sites across the United States. The American World is backed by the Language Research Institute at New York University and aims to speed practical speech for foreign born learners.
Tom Bean school boards receive a $9 000 grant and $21 000 loan for a new high school building. Washington wire cites Senator Tom Connally. plans by Page Brothers of Austin include brick or stucco design with auditorium gymnasium five classrooms and a library. The old building will be converted to a grammar school.
J M Simmons donated sixty National Geographic magazines to the grammar school library. Pupils and teachers praise the gift. Sixth grade girls make a baby quilt for a needy child. First grade program in chapel Friday includes The Wise Men story, songs, reading, and December acrostic.
The Whitewright Parent-Teacher Association plans a 4 o'clock meeting next Tuesday at the grade school. The program includes Arenes Song Joy To the World audience, a business session, a piano solo by Mrs Newton Manning, and the First Grade Children Glee Club performing Christmas carols. The public is invited.
December 14 voting on continuing the Bankhead Cotton Act for 1935 to 1936. Voters will use a Yes or No cross in designated county locations, with AAA announcing results. Question asks if the Bankhead act should remain in effect to protect signers of cotton contracts.
The Palace Theatre announces Catfish and Skillet will appear on Saturday for the regular and late shows. Bunny Biggs known as Skillet draws minstrel fans from Low Dockstader and Manhattan Scandals with Harry LeVan as Catfish. The duo have over a year together and may soon join a national radio hook-up.
Houston. Anson Jones, 36, a black man, bet five dollars he could hold a cue ball between his teeth. He won the bet but his jaws stuck, and doctors at a hospital pulled out three teeth when he finally spat out the ball.
J Y Russell publicity chairman for East Sherman District Methodist Young People's Union announces a 2:30 p m Sunday December 9 meeting at First Methodist Church Bonham. The program includes a business session worship by the Gober organization and a host union program with refreshments after. Russell urges all local members to attend.
