First Baptist Church has secured pledges for sufficient funds to build a three room Sunday school building on the lot south of the church. Construction will begin soon with two 15 by 15 foot rooms and one 15 by 30 foot room to accommodate three classes as attendance grows.
The compulsory school law of Texas takes effect Saturday December 5 per H L Durham superintendent of Whitewright schools. It applies to children aged 8 to 14 and requires attendance of at least 100 days in the 1923 24 scholastic year with no excuse accepted for missed days.
Ben Sturdivant editor of The Student's Reporter and Overton State ville business manager of The Ranger attend the second annual High School Press Association convention at Paylor College Belton this weekend Baylor College hosts delegates. The Matrix and Press Club plan entertainment including a play reception banquet and a Temple Telegram plant visit in Temple.
Mrs Howard Brodhead will read the story The Other Wise Man at Central Christian Church Friday evening December 7 at 7 o clock. The event will use fifty or more stereopticon slides to illustrate the tale. Admission is 25 cents with proceeds to the church. All citizens are invited to attend.
John H. Hume, weighing 250 pounds, won a Thanksgiving Day hot dog contest in New York, eating 53 frankfurters in a single sitting. Val Venges, last year’s champion, collapsed after 44. Hume accepted his prizes a fur-lined brown derby and a hand-painted leather vest, while Hume avoided mustard.
Deaths from automobile accidents totaled 11 666 last year in the census registration area covering 85 percent of the U S population. The rate was 12 5 per 100 000, up from 11 5 in 1921. California led with 26 0 per 100 000, New York 16 7, Mississippi 3 4. Dallas 27 deaths, Fort Worth 16, Houston 27, San Antonio 28.
Dr. J. H. Burma president of Trinity University will preach at the Presbyterian Church Sunday morning at 11 o clock. He is a leading Texas educator and a fluent speaker with past visits to the church.
Jas. McKinney aged 72 died at his Van Alstyne home Monday at noon. Born October 4, 1851 on the McKinney farm a mile north of Van Alstyne, he lived there until moving to town a few weeks ago.
The Central Christian Church Missionary Society will present its annual Woman's Day program next Sunday at 7 o clock. Sherman Christian Missionary Society members join with Carr Burdette College expression department students and a young man from Austin College to perform the playlet Turning It Over. Speakers include Mrs Cep as Shelburne Mrs Holt and Mrs Matthews. Admission is free and the public is invited.
Thirty members of the White Wright I O O F lodge attended a Denison I O O F special meeting. The first degree team explained the mysteries of the first degree to twenty candidates.
T. E. Griffith of Bonita was a visitor in town on Sunday. He was seen at local shops and chatted with residents during a brief stay, marking a cordial weekend visit.
Smith Lipscomb aged 83 of Bonham Texas died after heart trouble. He leaves a widow and eight children including R T Lipscomb a former district attorney. A native of South Carolina he was a Confederate veteran who fought around Richmond and saved General Robert E. Lee in a Petersburg engagement. He had lived in Bonham for 40 years.
The United States Army non-rigid airship TC-3 passed just north of town last Friday on its San Antonio to Scott Field route. It covered 825 miles in 30 hours 20 minutes with six officers aboard and averaged 71 miles per hour aided by a strong tail wind.
Mr and Mrs Jim Majors of Tremont hosted a Thanksgiving Day meal with four generations present. The gathering featured turkey and trimmings and singing after dinner. Grandpa Marshall offered a prayer for blessings past and future as guests from Pilot Grove Bethel and Whitewright joined the family.
Superintendent H L Durham and several local educators joined others at the Texas Teachers Association annual meeting held in Fort Worth over three days. Visiting relatives include Mrs T A Lewis and Mrs C F Naylor from Wichita Falls and Mrs Bettie Malock of Perry Oklahoma. J C Gillespie and H B Self were in Paris to obtain pine trees for decorating and resale by Hudson Davis & Company.
C M Penland of Waco spent the week end here with his grandfather, Co L Truett. Miss Fannie Laura Phillips is visiting Misses Phares at Sherman.
Representative Isaac R. Sherwood of Ohio, 88, the oldest member, has 22 years in the House and Civil War service with 43 battles. He is 60 years older than Michigan’s 28-year-old newcomer Clarence J. McLeod, a World War veteran first elected in 1921 to fill a vacancy and not seeking re election.
In Denison on December 5 O F Miles chief deputy sheriff said all forms of gambling games including slot machines punch boards and pulling post cards must be eliminated on orders from Assistant County Attorney Ross W Stoddard and the county attorney to comply with the law.
Fifty ex service men met at Pierce's Cafe for the American Legion banquet to rekindle local post interest. Dues reductions to six dollars plus state and national dues of two dollars and twenty five cents leave three seventy five for local treasury. A second banquet is planned for January with monthly events likely. new rituals will initiate future members.
Paris reports Dr. Foveau de Commelles, a French hygienist, claims nine tenths of women’s diseases come from wearing silk stockings in cold weather. He lists irritated throats to varicose ulcers and urges warm woolen stockings, though he notes many women would rather risk illness than change.
A deed recorded in Sherman last week conveys block 2 in O. T. P. Whitewright from J. W. Allen and wife to W. P. Vaughn and W. L. White for 2000 dollars. The site lies at the M K T and Cotton Belt railroads intersection. Earlier Sun reports wrongly named Kay Kimbell as purchaser.
Sam Currin went back to his Houston home Sunday following a visit with his sister Mrs. J D Badgett and other relatives.
Hugh Masters of Enterprise school attended the State Teachers meeting at Ft Worth last week. R L Johnson advertises a strong line of dolls toys and gifts for grown ups. Joe Hamilton visited Waco early this week for the Texas Grand Lodge of Masons annual meeting.
Raymond Phillips employed at the Kimbell elevators in Sherman visited his parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Phillips Sunday.
Mrs. J. W. Goree and daughters Ruth Mabel Fender and Mrs. Frank Barnett and Mrs. John Goree of Paris visited friends here Friday and Saturday.
R K McMurry aged 63 died Tuesday morning at home in East Whitewright after a three week illness. He was born September 21, 1860 in Canaan community and moved to Whitewright in 1911. He is survived by wife Lillie and seven children, plus a brother and three sisters. Funeral at Presbyterian Church was attended by many relatives and out of town visitors. Interment at Oak Hill cemetery.
Fitz Bryant W L Gordon Bob Sears Mark Montgomery and Ralph Sanders were among witnesses from this place who attended the S. M. A. Baylor game in Dallas last Thursday.
Joe Wallace, local farmer, displayed a large mustard stalk in town on Saturday. On the scales it tipped the beam at ten pounds. He said his fall garden was excellent, with vegetables grown in spring, and he plans to use seven to eight bushels of Irish potatoes from August as seed next spring.
