The Whitewright holiday parade will start Saturday at 2 p.m. with Santa Claus riding a local firetruck downtown. Local residents expect floats and entries from nearby parades to thrill spectators during the annual event.
The Chamber of Commerce will award first, second and third place trophies to winning floats. The first of the annual Christmas drawings will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Forty-three local merchants and businesses have contributed prizes. Drawings will be held this Saturday, Dec. 10 and 17 at 4 p.m. and on Christmas Eve at 2 p.m. The drawings will take place in front of the Flower Shop. winners must be present to win. About 30 prizes will be given weekly, including $250 in merchandise. Tickets available at participating merchants and must be stamped on the back to be valid. Merchants include Sherry's Beauty Salon, Harris Texaco, Edward's Chevrolet, and others.

Grayson county will not use the 1977 reassessed property values for ad valorem taxes. A Dallas judge ordered delaying the higher values set by Hunnicutt & Associates, requiring use of 1976 values while the Board of Equalization review proceeds. Commissioners face funding a 4.1 million dollar 1978 budget and may raise taxes or cut expenditures as the Jan 31 1978 deadline nears.
The Whitewright Sun invites youngsters to write to Santa Claus with their wishes for Christmas. Letters will be published in the December 22 Christmas greeting edition after copies are made and sent to Santa at the North Pole. Whitewright's Cemeteries Improvement and Beautification fund neared its $10,000 target as of Tuesday noon with $9,410 raised and an additional $720 pledged in the last week. Oak Hill cemetery road work and gate restructuring proceed ahead of a planned fence, with possible water line work if funds permit. Contributions came from local residents and donors in Sherman, Houston, Golden Valley, Minneapolis, Ada, and other communities, with final reporting paused for two weeks.
Texas Comptroller notes statewide sales tax up 22 percent, signaling strong economy and solid holiday shopping outlook. Whitewright totals reach 17 465 22 for year as city dues and other towns report gains from Denison to Sherman. Individual towns show varied gains from 13 to 44 percent with several districts posting double digit increases.
North Texas farmers met in Plano to back the December 14 nationwide Farmers Strike. Reported attendees include at least 10 Whitewright area and a bus load from Tom Bean. Plans call for a Tractor Parade from Texas Stadium into downtown Dallas to urge better farm legislation through Congress.

Daisy Caraway of Tom Bean is a patient at Wilson N. Jones in Sherman. Alberta Chesser, sister of Bennie Chesser, is recovering at Wilson N. Jones hospital from a hip fracture, residing at Whitewright Nursing Home. Mr. and Mrs. Amos Carter visited their children in Fort Worth during the holiday weekend.
The Whitewright Sun expands its Honor Roll of Farmers and Ranchers after a call for additions to last week's list. New entries include Jackie Jester Shirley Kizer Danny Merriman Ernest Nash Hoy Newell J.R. Robinson Clyde Hancock Larry Scott Jimmy Worsham James V. Owens.
Whitewright boys beat Colbert 64 to 6 in an uneven matchup while Colbert girls defeated Whitewright 71 to 32 in another contest. The results highlight differing outcomes for the two schools in this pair of games.
