Chevrolet will launch the Chevy II in 1962 with nine models between the Corvair and standard Chevrolets. The lineup includes station wagons, a hardtop sport coupe and a convertible. Edward N. The Texas Legislature enacts tough penalties for merchants and others under the new 2 percent sales tax taking effect Friday. Merchants face $500 fines for noncollection, improper resale use, and missed reports with daily fines for violations. fraud carries 25 percent of tax. 10 percent penalties apply for missing reports or payments. 6 percent interest accrues on overdue items. The comptroller may seize property within three years and adjust returns, with multiple reporting timelines and a three year deficiency filing window.
College Station reports a September list of plentiful foods including turkey beef late summer vegetables and fresh peaches. Supplies exceed normal trade needs with marketing efforts to ensure orderly distribution and high cold storage stocks and low prices. Colorado Kansas and Oklahoma peaches appear with Colorado peaches tripling last year’s volume while Calif ornia and southern states harvest winds down. Potatoes onions and celery are noted as especially abundant.

The Texas Department of Public Safety announces new fees effective Sept 1 after a legislative increase. Operator licenses rise from 2 to 3 dollars for two years, commercial licenses from 3 to 4.50 for one year, and chauffeur licenses from 4 to 6 per year. Duplicate licenses stay 25 cents.

The U S Office of Education projects 2 201 000 Texas students in public schools for 1961 62 an increase of 6 4 percent from 1959 60. Kindergarten through eighth grade enrollment stands at 1 694 000 and grades nine to twelve at 507 000 with 84 000 high school graduates expected in spring 1962.

Dick Walker becomes sole owner of the Childress Walker Pharmacy in Whitewright after purchasing full stake from Roby Childress. Walker, a WWII veteran and UT Pharmacy School graduate from Van Alstyne, plans to rename the business Walker Pharmacy once legal steps allow. Childress will remain part time as the transition proceeds.
VALDASTA Go-A South Georgia farmer Samuel M. Weldon, 68, and his horse Brownie, 27, are described as drinking buddies. They visit town on off days, with Weldon sometimes feeding Brownie beer after a beer himself. He says Brownie enjoys it more than he does and has even stopped at red lights, though he works to keep Brownie from overindulging.
A district court on Monday approved a final 2 percent dividend for U S Trust creditors. Previous payouts totaled about 2 66 million against 7 million in approved claims. The extra 142 000 aims to recover more for creditors and may enable an IRS tax write off if approved.
