Denison to Bells road project begins with ten men, six trucks, and a drag line cutting the first hill south of Denison. Short Period Left To Begin Easy Pay Plan on Back Taxes
Four more working days remain in which taxpayers may begin the partial payment plan on delinquent state and county taxes on real estate and personal property. Passed at the last session of the Legislature the law requires the payment to begin between Aug 23 and Sept 1. No sum less than 1 dollar is acceptable and 10 dollars or more must be owed. Taxes are to be paid in 10 equal installments over 18 months. If after one or more payments a taxpayer fails to pay more within four months the district attorney must file suit. County officials expect few to use the plan and warn it will burden the county. A new form must be printed and extra work for the treasurer and assessor-collector will result.
Engineer Succumbs at Engine's Throttle in Denison
Michael Murphy, 67, a veteran Katy Railroad passenger train engineer, died with his hand on the throttle early Tuesday while en route from Muskogee to Denison. Fireman Charles Horn brought the train into Denison after Murphy collapsed about forty four miles north. Conductor Cc. M. McManus served as fireman.

Pension funds need added money for 1937-38
Austin auditor Giles L. Arriett estimated an extra 3.5 million dollars would be needed for the old age pension program in the coming fiscal year starting Sept 1. He spoke to the Senate efficiency committee as the Legislature eyed a special session around Sept 20 to set taxes for pensions and the general fund. He warned ongoing indebtedness and higher living costs could push yearly requirements higher, with 120,000 pensioners expected and $14 per person from state and federal funds, plus $42,000 for administration. If liberalized aid covers marginal cases and debt is liquidated, a minimum 3.5 million would be needed for 1937-38, and 2.5 million for 1938-39. Arriett also urged more investigators to save money long term, noting pension staff declined from 605 to 484 between February and July and pending applications dropped from 62,725 to 2,449.

Austin. The Legislature will seek at least 7.56 million dollars in appropriations after Monday’s adoption of state constitutional amendments. Funds cover welfare for adult blind and dependent children, teacher retirement fund matching, old age assistance, surplus commodities, a new West Texas hospital at Big Spring, and securing salaries under the new system. The plan includes 360 thousand annually for blind aid and up to 15 dollars per month per recipient for 36 thousand dependent children, plus 2 million yearly for teacher retirement matching and 3.5 million first year for old age aid.
