Whitewright reports 499 bales ginned by Wednesday night with 459 so far this season. Rain halted picking after a two inch shower, but growers expect benefit. Market prices showed 10.90 a bale and 25 a ton for seed, versus 12.50 and 34 a ton last year.
A roundup of Forty Fifth Legislature acts becoming effective soon. Racing repeal already in practice due to funding. Stricter driving license law affects new drivers. old licenses endure until 1939. State dog law requires registration, muzzling after sunset, and allows poison posting. Dallas County bans fraternities and secret societies in schools. Second hand oil field equipment sales require a bill of sale over 25 dollars. Welfare division to be organized after August 23 vote. State liquor act tightens enforcement from September 1. Dentistry practice and advertising rules take effect January 1 1938. Appropriations become effective September 1.
A bolt struck E. W. Booher’s barn during a Saturday windstorm, burning the structure to the ground. Booher, milking inside, escaped injury, losing feed but no livestock. The farm, owned by Mrs. Silas Wilson of Slaton, had no insurance. In Bells, hail and wind after 6 p.m. damaged several barns and crops, injuring Mrs. Stroud and flattening corn and cotton.
Whitewright recorded 2.04 inches of rain after 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., bringing the year’s total to 15.20 inches. It ends a droughty spell since July 20, easing heat damage to cotton while nearby Sherman had 1.03, Denison 2.05, and Van Alstyne 1.95 inches.
The Whitewright Board of Education will meet Friday night August 27 for a public hearing on the 1937 38 budget. Those interested may attend. Bids will be received for storage and servicing of the school buses and for gas and oil. About 3500 gallons of gas and 100 gallons of oil will be used, says Superintendent H W Key.
Mooney Motor Coaches started service through Whitewright on Wednesday with three buses daily each way between Greenville and Sherman via Ida. Walter Jenkins said he would keep his Leonard to Sherman service via Whitewright and Bells. A petition supported Mooney Motor Coaches to establish the line, while Jenkins circulated an opposing petition.
W A Little acting director of the old age assistance commission said more than 20 million dollars has been distributed to Texas needy aged in the last 14 months. He explained the program aids those aged who cannot help themselves and emphasizes aid is limited to real need. Construction of lateral highways in 1936 pushed Texas public highway system to 160000 miles.
Whitewright residents head to the polls Monday to decide six amendments to the state constitution. Proposals include removing stockholder double liability for banks, funding aid to destitute children, establishing district officer fees, capping property taxes to fair market value with early-payment discounts, a Harris County road fund, and setting a monthly limit for the needy blind aligned with federal programs.
Denison Herald reports Houston contractor Russ Mitchell awarded the Highway 160 paving project between Denison and Bells. Work starts by Thursday with 150 workers and a Katy Railroad spur for material. concrete pouring to begin around Sept 10 and finish about three months later.
Washington heard Agriculture Department aims to convert the southwestern dust bowl into a 2,000,000 acre pasture across Oklahoma Kansas Texas Colorado and New Mexico with a $10,000,000 purchase and $76,000 for grass development. Assistant Secretary M L Wilson told the House appropriations committee grazing leases would be offered to farmers to rehabilitate the region by reuniting man and nature after windblown erosion.
Washington reports indicate Secretary Wallace and administration farm officials prefer loans on this year's cotton crop at a 9 cent basis, one cent below the state plan. They favor a 10 percent subsidy increase for 1937 soil conservation cooperators, about $10,000,000, with subsidies capping at roughly 60 percent of the 15.5 million bale crop. Estimated total subsidy around $65,000,000. loans targeted near $45 per bale, subject to market conditions.

Washington AAA officials announce first notice of future crop reductions advising winter wheat growers to leave 20 percent or more of base acreage unplanted this fall. They expect stricter 1938 soil conservation act provisions but say all winter wheat will be planted before any new program.
The Central Christian Church hosts the first annual Bi county Christian Women's Missionary Society meeting on Monday August 30. Mrs B F Hearn of Denison presides over business sessions. Miss Laura Lynn Major missionary to China on sick leave will be honored. The program led by Mrs G C Minor Denison features a symposium by Denison speakers on Youth Conference Stewardship and Interracial Understanding. Irene and Mildred Hancock Denison present a missionary dialog with talks by Joseph Lewis Kimberlin Heights Tenn and Mrs Rosa Young Sherman on Life Investment and Echoes From a Missionary. Rev Lloyd Motley Van Alstyne and Misses Jessie Belle and Mary Elizabeth Minor Ladonia sing.
Bethel Baptist Church, located three miles south of Whitewright, begins a new 30 by 40 foot frame building after razing the old structure. The Bethel community, a substantial Grayson County area, supports steady progress despite rural church challenges. Gross Alexander is constructing an eight room brick veneer home near the church.
Gov. James V. Allred tentatively set the week of September 20 to convene a Texas special session to raise new revenue for social programs and general government functions. He hopes one thirty day session suffices but a second may follow before Thanksgiving if needed, with taxes first and expense reductions after.
Washington reports Treasury officials plan a new simplified tax return to ease the March 15 crowds. The form will be issued January 2 and aimed at helping the small taxpayer, with potential revisions for upper brackets and corporations.

Sherman reports no change in the County’s 85 cent tax rate per $100 valuation, with B M Whiteacre presenting the 1938 budget Aug 27 for approval. The plan bases valuation at 36.5 million with projected receipts near 81.54 thousand and general fund cash around 30 thousand, up from 20 thousand in 1937.
