Up to Thursday morning 317 bales of cotton had been ginned in Whitewright, slightly less than the same date last year. Hot dry weather hastens opening and soon picking will be in full swing. Yields are above average but behind last year. Local buyers offer 8.75 cents per pound lint and 21 dollars per ton for seed.
No Rain in Whitewright in August Affects Cotton Crop
No rainfall occurred in Whitewright this August up to the report date. By contrast during the same period in 1937 August rainfall totaled 3.73 inches, and the previous year’s week saw 1.74 inches. Many farmers say the dry spell has harmed the cotton crop.

Teacher Completes Conservation Course In North Texas
T. H. Cunningham, a vocational agriculture teacher at Whitewright High School, is among 15 North Texas teachers who finished a three week course in soil and water conservation methods under Dr. L. G. Jones at Texas A and M. College. The program, held in Garland and the Duck Creek project area, covered erosion control and field training with practical farm planning. Cunningham plans to lead farmer and student groups to inspect Duck Creek work, to apply conservation practices locally. North Texas area supervisor L. I. Samuel notes last year’s group helped farmers establish conservation on about 5,000 acres.

Living Costs Drop 0.2 Percent July 1937
New York report from the National Industrial Conference Board shows living costs for wage earners fell 0.2 percent from June to July.
