Whitewright Mayor F M Echols argues for Texas state relief bonds to supplement federal funds. He warns that without cooperation and state authority, unemployment will worsen and local relief efforts fail, urging a Saturday vote to authorize the Legislature to issue bonds.
Washington reports for this crop year ginnings up to August 16 total 459,911 running bales, with 9,815 round bales counted as half. Last year at the same date ginnings were 251,451 running bales, including 3,619 round bales. State totals show Georgia 46,653 and Louisiana 404,818 among others.
Local debate over cotton prospects centers on insect damage. County agent B F Gray says Grayson County will plant more cotton than last year despite 38 000 acres retired. Growers report varying yields as weather worsens and Whitewright sees higher planting after oats kill. By Wednesday night 115 bales had been ginned. prices ranged from 9 1/4 to 9 cents, with seed at 15 per ton.
Washington reports Missouri as the twenty second state to favor repealing the Eighteenth Amendment. Fourteen more repeal votes are needed. Elections are set in fifteen states by November 7 with Maine Ohio Pennsylvania North and South Carolina counted for conventions in December to implement the repeal.
Secretary Wallace said on Monday night that U S cotton plantings may drop from about 40 million to around 25 million acres next spring. He cited farm adjustment programs and noted Southern leaders expect a plan to avoid unlimited, planless cotton planting.

Federal prohibition enforcement ended in Houston on Tuesday as the last two agents were reassigned to San Antonio. Local police and county officers now handle enforcement as beer sales continue in the open. The Louisiana Texas office shifted to San Antonio this week, leaving two agents in Houston.
