R B Lockhart recalls Grandma’s corncob pipes and early female smokers in Whitewright. He muses on Al Smith vs Hoover in 1928 and a possible 1930s Republican win altering New Deal era policies. He notes that U S industrial accidents cost about 460 million dollars annually.
Whitewright residents report unusually high mineral content in local water this summer. The city notes salt buildup in evaporative coolers and suggests daily drainage for recirculating units to reduce mineral deposition. Officials elsewhere blame Lake Texoma water and upstream oil-field waste for high salinity.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at North Park Baptist Church in Sherman for Mrs. Josie Elizabeth Wilson 81 of San Francisco California who died Sunday night at her daughter’s Denison home. Buried at West Hill Cemetery Sherman she left Ladonia born October 8 1874 and married William Wilson in 1924. Survivors include three daughters a son a sister eight grandchildren 17 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
Thomas Sanford Vincent 80 of Whiterock Whitewright route 2 died Sunday at 6 15 am in a Sherman hospital after a five month illness He operated a Whiterock store ten years and earlier farmed in Ida Community He was a Church of Christ member Survived by eight sons four daughters four brothers a sister and many grandchildren great grandchildren Burial in Cedar Cemetery
Johns-Mansville Corp will build an asbestos cement pipe plant north of Denison on 400 acres near Highway 75 and the MK&T Railroad. The facility aims to employ 270 people with a payroll over 1.2 million dollars annually. Construction should finish by late 1957 with 350000 square feet of production and storage space.
Local dealers report new national housing law boosts FHA Title I loans for home repairs and modernization. Loan limits rise from 2500 to 3500 with lower rates on larger sums. longer repayment terms up to five years. occupancy wait reduced to 90 days for larger loans. new homes can use FHA insurance sooner. extra insured amount aids expansion of older homes and additions.
Lloyd E. Shirley of Sherman is named field executive for the Sherman Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, an area including Whitewright. Shirley, 1952 ETSTC graduate, has served 30 years as assistant scout master in Sherman and teaches in Sherman public schools.
Adlai E Stevenson will open his presidential bid with a Labor Day address in Detroit at Cadillac Square. He will also speak before the American Legion in Los Angeles later in the week and address the liberal party convention in New York on Sept 11 and a Harrisburg fund raising dinner on Sept 12.
Grayson County commissioners plan a five cent tax rate cut for 1957 underscoring a tentative budget based on an 80 cent rate versus 85 cents in 1956. Assessed valuations at 1956 totaled 76 million dollars, down from 1955 by 257,354 dollars, with expected receipts of 608,000 dollars. The court will set the rate at its September session and notes a cash basis for 1957, as in 1956.
