The Ex-Students Association of Grayson College announces the 8th annual reunion on Sunday August 25 with an anticipated larger attendance. A luncheon will be served in the high school gym with attendees bringing well filled baskets to form a large communal meal.
Washington reports the Office of Price Administration raised prices on canned corn peas and tomatoes to offset dropped subsidies effective immediately. No 2 size peas and tomatoes up 2 cents. corn and tomato juice up 2 cents. 14 ounce catsup and six ounce tomato paste up 1 cent. OPA also boosts retail ceilings for cotton flannel shirts and various industrial items while suspending price controls on certain beans and insecticides.
Boyce House, a Fort Worth candidate for lieutenant governor, declares the runoff hinges on opposition to the sales tax. He notes 340,000 votes in a prior election and credits loyal supporters while arguing merchants, housewives, farmers, and workers oppose the tax, which would burden the masses.
New Orleans Cotton Exchange sold the first Louisiana crop bale after hours. Bidding opened at 35 cents a pound and the 500 pound bale was knocked down to Thomas Jordan, a New Orleans broker, for $4,495 totaling $8.99 per pound. Farland de Jean of Opelousas shipped the bale.
Chicago university tests 1100 chemical agents for wartime use while noting many have great benefits for peacetime agriculture. One tenth of a pound could ruin an acre of crops, and the findings were disclosed by the Botanical Gazette.
Former Grayson County sheriff Floyd Everheart died Sunday at his Whitewright home after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday at the Methodist Church, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Surviving are his widow, a son in Shreveport, a daughter in Denison, four brothers, two sisters, and a grandson.
American tourists run a one shot scheme in Mexico City. An American drives a used car bought for $800 into Mexico and sells it for $1,500 or more. The buyer posts a border bond and resells it for $3,000 plus to export to Spain. The seller nets profit after a homeward flight costing a couple of hundred dollars.
Duncan Robertson, called the Corn King, reports corn on his Hammond area farm is so tall that an ordinary six footer cannot reach the top to harvest the ears. He cites backing from the State Agriculture Department and says such corn cannot be grown elsewhere, not even in Iowa.
A street egg failed to fry on Main Street Whitewright as several minutes passed before it was run over by a car. Despite heat up to 119 in downtown sun, regional thermometers ranged from 106 to 113 with warnings of drought and water scarcity in North Texas.
H B McMahan of Trenton has assumed duties as station agent for the Katy Railroad here but will not move to Whitewright yet He will rent a house for his wife and three children and continue to live in Trenton until a residence is found He succeeds C I Witt who resigned about a month ago The Trenton Tribune praised McMahan noting he has served since March 1943 and will be transferred to Whitewright for similar duties while housing issues delay his move
The Sun honors long time subscribers including J. W. McMurry who has been on the list for 34 years or more and recalls subscribing since The Plow and Hammer era. New honorees this week include Dr. Ross R. May Cadet Davis Parrish W. C. Brown Sr. Ralph Kaiser M. T. Craig Mrs. M. Greenway and others.
The Andolsek family suffered injuries when a haystacker struck a 7000 volt line near Greeley. Eda was pinned by the charge, Louis and John were burned while aiding her, and John Adams pulled them to safety. Mrs. John Andolsek underwent an emergency appendectomy later. All were recovering satisfactorily by Saturday.
Negotiations are under way to secure the Gainesville Circus for the first two nights of a five day Bonham fair to be held October 1 to 5. The remaining three nights will be devoted to a rodeo staged in the arena at the rodeo grounds. Also a note urging removal of old rags rugs and papers as fire hazards.
In Sherman a badly decomposed body was identified as 81 year old Mrs N O Kreager who had been missing eight weeks with about $9000 in her possession. The body was found in an old dry well south of Perrin Field by farmers Neely and Benedict. Willis Kreager and John Kreager identified it by a missing left toe and finger patterns. County officials requested a forensic criminology specialist from the Texas Department of Public Safety to aid investigation. Indications suggest lime saturation before disposal.
Secretary Wallace said the nation is already on a boom and bust economic ride. He noted postwar full employment is temporary and inflation is driving gains, not lasting stability, outlining three stages: a transient boom, a bust, and a normal yet weaker demand period with prices favoring stronger industries.
Thirty thousand cases of canned horse meat with gravy aboard the Steamship Alfred E. Smith bound for Bremerhaven Germany. The manifest lists 30 792 cases of canned horse meat with gravy. The ship also carries flour fertilizer and asphalt and was loaded in Galveston last week.
M. E. Winburn district manager of the Lone Star Gas Company retired August 1 after twenty years service. He received a gold medal for completing 20 years. He supervised towns Whitewright Trenton Leonard Celeste and resided mainly in Whitewright. He moved to Whitewright from Cumby Hopkins County and once rivaled Gov. Tom Campbell for a second term. He notes his neighbor R R Williams once led a gubernatorial bid in Cumby. The successor has not been announced but will be soon.
Washington announces a plan for winter field and off post wear in a blue color, with details such as shade coat and pant color to be settled. A cape lining and bright overcoat are proposed, accessories chosen later, and civilian materials spared. Some units will test samples as decisions stretch into 1948. The WAC may receive a livelier green uniform to pair with russet gear.
Fort Worth sellers led by Raymond E. Austin of Trackerville Oklahoma sold a load of 23 choice hogs at $25 per 100. Handled by Nored Hutchens Commission Co, the hogs averaging 201 pounds went to an order buyer for Haley Packing Co of Lufkin. This beats last week’s $24.50 high and compares with the WWI peak of 23.50 in April 1918.
State Treasurer James reported total cash in all state funds at July’s end amounting to $114,985,547. The general revenue fund declined from $35,037,136 to $31,477,239, while the unallocated clearance fund rose to $11,374,282 from $8,811,212 the prior month.
Preston Everheart Post No. 225 of the American Legion elected officers at its Tuesday meeting. Thomas Sears is post commander, Earl Blanton vice commander, Elbert Bennett adjutant, Griffin Dollarhide service officer, B W Newman chaplain, Clay Horton historian and publicity officer, and Billy Roberts sergeant at arms. Installations are planned for Oct. 1 at the High School gymnasium. The post also voted to give away a new Ford sedan in late November to raise funds for a post home at Legion Park, with Dennis Auto Company to deliver the car. The post voted to add to its name the name of the first Wright service man killed in action in World War II.
In Galveston Bay two Houston auto salesmen Harvey A. Taylor and Grafton Montgomery clung to a small overturned boat for 12 hours before a fishing party spotted them near shore. The anglers tossed an anchor, enabling their rescue at dawn. Montgomery, a Whitewright native and son of the late S H Montgomery, credited the finder with saving their lives.
Grayson County farmers with federally loaned cotton have until October 1 1946 to repay and gain from current high prices. Loans mature July 31 but repayment can occur by Oct 1. Remaining cotton will be pooled by the Commodity Credit Corporation and sold, profits shared among participating farmers. Most borrowers used about 20 cents per pound.
Vice Admiral Blandy predicted atomic power will drive ships in the 1950s and planes much later. He voiced determination to push development, while noting it is too soon for final conclusions from the Crossroads tests. He cited the atomic bomb as a fearsome weapon against naval forces.
C C Stewart of Bosqueville sells McLennan County’s first bale of the year to W N Junghams of J C Hann Cotton Co for 45 1/2 cents per pound. Stewart also sold last year’s first bale for 25 1/2 cents plus a 275 dollar bonus.
