Jerry Pierce Named Whitewright Police Chief

Jerry M. Pierce, 38, a retired Army Sergeant Major, was appointed by the Whitewright City Council as the new Chief of Police. He will replace Acting Chief Leroy Duquette and brings 21 years in the Infantry Army, retiring in July. Pierce is a Orangeville-born local who grew up in Whitewright.

Funds Seek Donors for Fireman Hall Air Conditioning

Fireman's Hall in Whitewright received year round air conditioning today but faces a $779 shortfall. About $1,000 has been raised by Tom Sears and Herman Philley through donations to the Fireman Hall Air Conditioning Fund at First National Bank. Contributors include Edwards Chevrolet, First National Bank, Dawson Propane, and many local residents and firms. The hall serves American Legion, Lions, Rotary, and civic groups with city utilities covered by the town.

Whitewright City Adopts Codes and Chooses New Police Chief

Whitewright City Council in regular session approved plumbing electrical and building codes and named Jerry Pierce 38 year old retired Army Sergeant Major as new police chief with duties starting immediately. The council also voted to buy a 1970 Ford Custom police car for 2690.44 dollars from Bob Meisenbach Ford and heard about neighborhood redevelopment plans from Mel Orman of Rady and Associates.

Area Maize Yields Varied Across Grayson and Fannin

An informal survey shows a spotty maize harvest with yields ranging from 1,200 to 3,800 pounds per acre. Farley Grain Co. owner Jack Farley notes overall area yields higher than state averages but emphasizes wide variation. Clyde Robinson near White Rock reports 3,500 to 3,800 pounds per acre, aided by localized showers. Charles Skaggs cites 2,000 pounds per acre on one field, with other plots similar soil conditions producing over 3,000 in nearby fields after recent rain. The Ely area is worst, with some nonproductive maize at 1,200 to 1,300 pounds per acre. Late planters benefit from three inches of rain in the past two weeks aiding growth.

Grayson County Seeks Tougher Septic Rules Hearing Set

Grayson County Commissioners Court will hold a special public hearing on August 17 to consider stricter septic tank regulations. If adopted the rules go to the Texas Water Quality Board for final approval under the Texas Water Quality Act. The plan covers sewage repair approvals, permit fees, construction standards and penalties up to 200 dollars for violations. The Grayson Health Department cites a Texoma Regional Planning Commission survey showing more than 2,000 septic tanks around Lake Texoma and many more elsewhere in the county and warns of health risks from overflow and mosquito breeding. Dr. Mary Jo Tonelli would oversee administration if approved, stressing county resident support is crucial to success.

Badgett Issues Laws on Trash Burning

Ed Badgett director of the Environmental Health Section in Sherman warns violators of local and state trash burning laws could face penalties from the Texas Air Control Board. He notes households may burn wash but buildings with more than three families cannot burn, while apartments, businesses, churches and schools cannot burn. The Grayson County Health Department calls for cooperation with Whitewright to curb pollution from burning and waste disposal.

Whitewright Names Mac Woodruff as New High School Principal

The Whitewright School Board selected Mac Woodruff, returning to Whitewright from Cooper Schools where he served as principal. Woodruff replaces David Johnson who resigned to teach full time. Johnson’s departure and new hires including Mrs. Linda Rymer and Mrs. Rachel Gray shape a large faculty slate as preparations begin for in service sessions at Grayson Junior College and fall enrollment.

Rural Water System Grant Aid Approved for Whitewright Area

Senator John Tower's office said the Farmers Home Administration approved a $183,000 loan to Two-Way Water Corporation of Grayson County. Funds will develop storage tanks wells pumping plants and distributor systems to serve rural residents in Whitewright.

Three Whitewright Men Named Outstanding in America

Milton Simpson Tom Brookshire and Harry Vidal from Whitewright were chosen for the 1971 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America. Nomination came from local civic groups and Jaycee chapters. the award honors men 21 to 35 for community and professional leadership.
