Numerous service members and families in Whitewright area are noted with visits and status changes. Sgt Maurice Wright and Staff Sgt Lester Martin returned home, while Lt Albert Jeakson’s group left Dalhart after visiting relatives.
Willie Dreyer, owning a gasoline card, runs a 30 mile round trip daily between Oakland and Richmond to reach his refinery job in Richmond. He rests half an hour, then works moving oil drums. Since Feb 1 he has logged about 6,000 miles and plans to enter the national 30,000 meter championships in San Francisco next winter.
British bombers unleashed a ninth raid in ten days on Hamburg, with Danish officials estimating 200000 Germans killed as fires rage and a vast armada drops over 8000 tons of bombs since July 24. Air Ministry notes unprecedented destruction across fifty square miles with major factories hit and evacuation ordered for survivors.
Senate hearing cited Dr. R R Sayers from the Bureau of Mines explaining that American Flying Fortresses bombing Naples from North Africa consumed vast gasoline. He said a single mission used about 1 110 gallons and a monthly night raid over Hamburg and Berlin would match the daily gasoline use of the nation’s 30 000 000 vehicles.
War Department reports Texas airmen in North Africa boast that Texas is the United States and that the other 47 states are mere satellites aiding Texas. They proclaim Deep in the Heart of Texas as the national anthem and Austin as the capital of the United States.
Sgt Herb Fish of Canon City Colorado killed eight Germans with eight Garand shots during the Bloody Ridge assault. He was helmeted by a German hit that glanced off his helmet and left him momentarily stunned. Fish rallied instantly, dropping the first German, then sequentially felling the rest as his unit pressed the hill.
Georgia appears first to lower voting age to 18, Governor Arnall seeking national support. Incomplete returns show about 16,810 in favor to 5,260 against, with an estimated 160,000 new voters adding to 425,000 total. 18-year-olds would face no poll tax and could vote in all elections.
Soviet forces penetrated Orel as German defenses collapsed and rear guards fled. Hand-to-hand fighting filled the ruined city while the Red Army routed German detachments along rail routes north and south, driving toward favorable German positions and wiping out last-stand guards.
James E. and Miriam A. Ferguson sue the Tyler Morning Telegraph for libel seeking 100000 total damages. The petition claims a March editorial damaged their reputations as former governors and cites the paper’s ownership by the T. B. Butler estate.
War Food Administrator Marvin Jones advised Representative Patman that 1944 cotton production restrictions were removed due to wartime demand for cottonseed products and higher grade cotton. He said supplies of lower grade fiber are ample, but middling and better grades and longer staples are growing short.
Mexico City reports a total of 34 215 Mexican farm workers sent to the United States since September 1942 under the program. H J Brown of the Farm Security Administration notes the July 15 figure up from 31 936 and says 46 250 including rail workers have gone, with contracts generally complied.
Texas's largest underground cavern is Longhorn Cavern located 11 miles southwest of Burnet. The site highlights its prominence among cavern formations and serves as a notable regional attraction.
Syracuse Nebraska merchant E C Finke handed out twice the normal quota of cigars as he became a father and a grandfather on the same day. His daughter Mrs Paul Presly had a son and his wife gave him a daughter, all on the same date.
Sam Rayburn of Bonham will be the principal speaker at the Grayson College alumni reunion in town on Sunday August 22 at 11 a.m. A lunch will follow at noon in the school gym with baskets expected from all attendees. Six hundred invitations have been mailed and non alumni are welcome to attend.
Dr. Geo W Cox urges early diphtheria immunization for children as young as six months noting two thirds of diphtheria deaths occur before age six. He explains toxoid for prevention and antitoxin for cure, stressing early treatment and public awareness to lower Texas death rates.
Lt. Albert L. Jackson engineer at Dalhart Army Air Base spoke on Army Air Corps candidate training and commissions at a Rotary Club luncheon. He described the tough courses and work required for officer candidates. The Texas Legislature structure was noted by club visitors.
The report notes that about 100000 miles of telegraph wire are currently in use across Texas, illustrating the vast reach of early communications infrastructure.
John L. Lewis and United Mine Workers urge approval of a model contract with underground travel time pay of 1.25 dollars per day. The War Labor Board, in an amicable hearing, took the case under advisement and may rule within two weeks. Lewis defended portal to portal pay as a civilizing standard and noted miners have long claimed travel time as work time.
Voters in Common School District No 42 and Whitewright Independent School District will vote Saturday August 21 on consolidation and a 65 cent school tax. Whitewright election at city hall led by W H Horton. District 42 at R E Simpson home with S T Montgomery and C W Spinks as judges. Tax would rise from 50 to 65 cents if approved. Both districts must approve consolidation and tax change.
The first electric power plant in Texas was erected in Galveston in the early eighties. Texas has about 8 000 miles of 60 000 volt transmission lines and 20 000 miles of 11 000 to 60 000 volt lines along with thousands of miles of lower voltage lines. Texas averages roughly 11.6 telephones per 100 population.
