Whitewright’s newly formed Volunteer Fire Department faced its first test Tuesday afternoon when a blaze struck Pascal Farley’s row of sheet iron grain elevators. The center building, filled with corn cobs and some feed, was saved by rapid firemen action though the flames caused several thousand dollars in damage. Farley was uninsured. Dry weather has sparked grass fires, giving the department useful practice under the guidance of O R Edwards, retired Dallas captain, who oversaw the Farley blaze.
Texas lifts all age limits on Salk polio vaccine. Health commissioner Dr Henry Holle says vaccine is now available for all Texans over 19. Previously only under 20 and pregnant women were eligible. He notes 16 percent of paralytic polio and 29 percent of polio deaths this year are in the over 19 group.
The 4 H Club met at 2 p m Tuesday in the Presbyterian Church basement to review the club motto pledge and prayer and to plan the county dress revue set for Tuesday August 7 at 2 pm at the same church. Many members attended and refreshments were served to listed 4 H girls and two adult leaders.
Graveside services were held at Vittitoe Cemetery in Kentuckytown for Mrs. F. E. Vittitoe 85 who died last Thursday at a Wichita Falls hospital. Rev. J. W. Polk officiated. A Weston native, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Shook. Survived by daughter Mrs. Joe M. Taylor of Dallas and grandson Joe E. Taylor of Dallas.
Newman defeated David Brown by 7 967 to 4 844 in Grayson County Saturday primary for county attorney. Local races showed strong Grayson splits with Van Zandt and Korioth advancing to a runoff for flatorial representative and Blanton defeating Wilsford by over three to one in sheriff race.
A vacation Bible school begins Monday at Kentuckytown Baptist Church for children from cradle roll to intermediates. Sessions run nightly at 7 30 with all children welcome. Houston Garner serves as superintendent in charge of the school.
Joe M. Taylor of 2211 Kirby Dallas died Sunday in a Dallas hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held in Dallas Tuesday and burial was in Restland Memorial Park. He was a former Whitewright resident who started a dairy and poultry farm in 1942, later returned to Dallas and reentered advertising. Survivors include his wife, son Joe E. Taylor, and brother Noden W. Taylor, all of Dallas.
L. L. Wendell announces the First Sunday Singing Convention at Cannon on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. He invites all who like to sing or hear singing, promoting new song books and promising relief from the heat through music.
About 12 Dumas volunteers answered the Shamrock plant tank fire. Five will receive pay of 2 dollars per alarm. Six firefighters and marshal Paschel Pool, 31, were killed. Three others are hospitalized with burns. All victims were married with children.
The Texas Railroad Commission grants a six percent increase in intrastate freight rates within Texas. The hike applies to rail and motor truck shipments with some exceptions. This follows a parallel six percent rise in interstate rates approved earlier by the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Owen Muncy enraged during a quarrel with his wife drove his car into his five room house three times. He smashed two walls and left the living room bedroom and kitchen exposed.

Dollarhide Jr. delivered the year's first bale weighing 1810 pounds with a 481 pound ginned bale at Donigan Gin. A second bale followed Tuesday from Dollarhide, ginned at Whitewright Gin. No sale occurred due to missing marketing card. The community contributed 111.35 in cash and goods as a premium, plus gasoline, a haircut, cleansing cream, a car wash and a year’s Sun subscription.

Washington The Agriculture Department forecast a record 1956 calf crop of 43,272,000 head up 1 percent from 43,001,000 last year and 19 percent above the 1945-54 average. The agency cited near record cows and heifers on farms and a higher calving percentage as the main factors.
City water superintendent Henry J. Graeser told the Texas Railroad Commission on Friday that North Texas oil fields are dumping brine into the Red River, raising Dallas water salinity. He cited locations along tributaries and urged immediate action. the Commission pledged cooperation.
