Whitewright records 0.76 inch of July rainfall from four events on July 3 22 23 and 27. Ground remains dry with cracks large enough to fit a foot. Through July seven months total 31.40 inches vs 24.25 normal. Farmers split on corn needs though agree cotton is thriving without rain.
The relief allotment committee reduced August direct relief to 95 million dollars as seasonal work lowers caseload to about 19.25 million people. WPA projects are expected to provide jobs for hundreds of thousands next month while 2.5 million already have work under relief administration and many must shift to new project types.
Leon Chumbley son of Rev and Mrs Cleophus Chumbley was bitten on the hand by a black widow spider last Saturday. He was treated by a local physician with swelling and pain but is expected to recover. Several black widow spiders have been caught nearby, but this is the first confirmed bite with prompt treatment.
Federal judge enjoined the Internal Revenue Bureau from collecting the ginner tax in Texas halting bale tag issuance. The Texas Cotton Ginners Association seeks a solution as 25 percent of Texas crop faces immobilization while most cotton goes to export or out of state. Committee leaders Day Lucas and Marshall press for options as the September hearing looms.
Rev. A. W. Yell of the Presbyterian Church at Canaan announces an old fashioned revival beginning Sunday evening at 8 15. The event is a cooperative revival with Methodist and Presbyterian pastors delivering sermons at Canaan church.
Brannon owner of Palace Theatre returned to Whitewright after a two week vacation. The theatre closed during absence and reopened Wednesday night before a fair sized audience. Brannon has booked several good pictures with details to follow. Theatre patrons were glad to see it reopen.
Bonham celebrates WPA approval in Dallas for paving eighty graveled blocks and forty with black top. Mayor Leonard Bailey secured the project during a Dallas visit. County Judge Spies names a planning board with Mayors Bailey Moyer and Ewing to guide town projects.
Miss O'Dell to teach home economics at Whitewright High School this year after the department received federal aid. A 1935 graduate of Texas State College for Women in Denton, she resides in Byers.
A Whitewright civic league organizing to address local roads and county WPA projects grew from a Tuesday night meeting. Leaders F M Echols and C B Bryant Jr. were elected, with plans to formalize a permanent group next Tuesday.
Sherman notes classification of 130 Grayson County schools completed with grade allocations for Tom Bean Sadler Southmayd Pilot Grove Pottsboro Cedar Mills and others. Board approves private transport where lines exist and sets or extends multiple bus routes out of Bells Whitesboro Whitewright Van Alstyne Gunter Tioga and Tom Bean area while rejecting some proposals.
Flint Michigan Audtor General John J. O Hara filed suit to reclaim a 464 board bill from Balfe McDonald now serving ten to fifteen years for murdering his wealthy widowed mother Grace B McDonald. The action tests a new law allowing collection from prisoners with outside wealth. McDonald inherited an estate estimated at 250000 after his mother s death. his father was once Flint mayor.

Washington Jr son of the late founder of the Tuskegee school will speak in Whitewright on Bond street east of the First National Bank at 8 30 tonight White people are invited to attend He has recently spoken in Denison and Sherman to large audiences and will discuss problems of the negro race and the best way to handle them.
Sherman report notes WPA adjustments under State Administrator H P Drought to provide steady jobs for about 2300 able bodied residents on relief by Jan 1. Start dates, funding levels, and road program reshaping are outlined, with debate on increasing per man wages and future funds.
In Fort Worth near Rose Hill Burial Park a two truck collision fatally injured Leroy Parr and his wife, both 27 from Hurst, while their three year old daughter Dorris Ann escaped unharmed. The Parr truck, parked without rear lights, was struck by a heavier vehicle driven by W G Langford of Tom Bean. Parr died an hour after the crash. his wife died after learning of their daughter's safety. The toll raised Tarrant County traffic deaths to fifty four for the year.
Extension Service entomologist R R Reppert warns against white arsenic and lime mixtures for leaf worm control due to serious risk to cotton. He cites farmers using arsenic and sal soda with some success but cautions inexperience can cause near total crop loss. Recommends calcium arsenate lead arsenate or Paris green diluted with lime.
L B Denning announced that Municipal Gas Company and Community Natural Gas Company units of Lone Star system have combined into one entity. Chester L May of Dallas becomes general manager of the merged properties while L B Denning Jr of Dallas is named general superintendent of the companies serving nearly 300 cities in Texas and Southern Oklahoma.
A Sunday night prohibition program at Whitewright Methodist Church drew strong attendance as youth speakers Miss Lula Lee Vestal Lloyd Stowers and G F Bryant Jr. argued for Texas statewide prohibition. J W Henry urged contributions to support the dry campaign for the Aug 24 election.
Dallas doctor explains heat drains body chloride through sweat. Dr J Shirley Sweeney says low chlorides impair cooling and urges salt replacement via drinks with orange juice or water. He warns against overexertion and suggests staying relaxed, keeping feet on desk, and dreaming of trout streams.
The Senate approved a House resolution exempting 1936 Texas Centennial imports from tariff duties and another resolution to pay salaries of the Centennial Commissioner and staff from a $3 million appropriation. Payments extend up to six months after the exposition closes, starting as fixed by the cabinet commission.
