Local residents travel and visit relatives across Slaton Dallas Whitesboro and Sherman. Notable events include births sermons church revival at Methodist Church and memorial services for Webb's Chapel in Dallas County with community figures and candidates noted.
The famous Blue Jay singers of Birmingham Alabama will perform at the Negro Methodist Church next Wednesday evening May 6. J W Scott pastor says a section of seats is reserved for whites and admission costs 10 and 15 cents.
Decoration day will be observed at Wittitoe Cemetery three miles west of Whitewright Sunday May 3. If weather is bad the observance will be the following Sunday announced by George Ball.
The annual service will be held at Pilot Grove Cemetery six miles southwest of Whitewright on Sunday May 3 at 2 p m. A brief program is planned with participation from local groups and residents.
The United States Civil Service Commission announces open competitive examinations for positions including junior forester and junior range examiner at 2000 dollars yearly, medical officers at 3800 dollars, principal agronomist at 5600 dollars, and other roles across Agriculture Labor and Education departments. Rev and Mrs J A Henderson hosted a surprise Friday evening supper near Whitewright for Mrs Hendersons 58th birthday. Guests from Sherman Trenton and nearby areas included Virgil Reynolds Grace Sloan Ray Henderson Dove Henderson Euell Scott Albert Reeves Bill Henderson Jack Henderson J B Henderson Ben Reynolds D B Andrew and their families.
The final spring meeting was hosted by Mrs. Ross R May with Mrs May as hostess. New active member Mrs H W Key and associate member Mrs R E Hickman were welcomed, while Mrs A M Bryant resigned. The program covered Texas Centennial history, So Big Texas, Foreign Settlements in Texas, Glimpses of the Centennial, a Dallas district meeting report, and a cream and cake course was served.
The Ely 4-H Club met Friday night April 24 at its regular meeting place. Sponsor Lloyd Moore spoke briefly on the new cotton program. Members discussed the soil conservation contest at the Texas Centennial and the Bonham encampment in June.
The Whitewright Music Club held its last fall meeting at Hamilton studio in the grade school. The program on Texas Under Six Flags featured readings, songs, and stories. Mrs J B May of Savoy read a poem, with piano by Miss Sarah Belle Gillett. performances featured Miss Dorothy Hamilton Miss Aileen Pennington Miss Gillett and Mrs T M Johnson. Tommie Chenoweth played Tarentelle by Dallas-born composer Mrs Laud German Pippen. The group voted to observe Music Week May 3 to 9 and hostesses were Dorothy Hamilton Corinne Lewis.
The West Circle of the Baptist Missionary Society met Monday with Mrs. C J Meador for a social afternoon featuring a white elephant party. Members brought gifts, paid 10c for numbers, and drew for gifts. Fourteen members and one guest attended with refreshments served.
A group gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Alexander to honor Phillip Norris, Robert Alexander, and Norene Henslee. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Collier and son Walden of Meritae, Mrs. R. L. Alexander and family, Mrs. James, and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Sanderson and children.
Mr and Mrs Lee Norris and son Jerry Lee join Mr and Mrs Roy Norris and family in Whitewright for a family gathering. Also listed are Mr and Mrs Phillip Norris and Bill Collier, and Mr and Mrs John Smith with family alongside Mr and Mrs Jesse James in Canaan.
The Presbyterian Church led by Dr B Wrenn Webb offers Sunday school at 10 a m worship at 11 a m featuring The Tragic Ending of a Popular Hero. A New Song program with the local Music Club contributes to National Music Week observance at 7 30 p m.
Pastor C W Dennis invites all church members to the Sunday school at 10 am and sermon at 11 am. No evening service at our church. Members are asked to worship at the Presbyterian Church and later visit the Baptists. Young people meet at 7 pm. thanks given for contributions and a fine spirit.
Minister J R Waldrum and superintendent J M Simmons announce a Sunday worship with preaching at 10 a m and communion at 11 a m. Bible study follows, with Wednesday sessions. Three new deacons Lonie Darwin Pascal Harper and Alonzo Harper will be ordained. current deacons include J F Spindle Roy Yowell Simmons and E O Young. Members urged to attend and visitors welcome.
Sunday morning features a top male quartet from San Marcos State Teachers College. They perform at 10 o clock for the Anglers Class and again at 11 o clock with a brief sermon on the value of music by the pastor. Everyone is invited to attend and Sunday school attendees are urged to arrive early for seating.
O. L. Jones secretary announces that J. D. Buster of Sherman district deputy grand master will visit Whitewright Lodge No 167 AF and AM when the body meets in regular communication next Monday night.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Clines of Wolfe City visited Mrs. Mary Riggs for the week end. Mr. and Mrs. Oland Bush and children called on Mr. and Mrs. Rullie Bush of Whitewright Sunday. Also noted were visits by Mr. and Mrs. Tom Garner, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Wilson, Miss Lois Collins and Curless Aldridge of Trenton.
Local residents report visits to relatives in Oklahoma City and Bonham. Families including Hall Hutchins Baldwin and Blanton share gatherings and travels. News closes with sympathy for Walter Pritchett whose home, a former Mahurin landmark, was destroyed by fire last week.
John H. Pennell aged 58 died at home near Tom Bean early Saturday. Funeral conducted at Presbyterian Church in Tom Bean with Dr. J F Fender and Rev. Jack White. Interment at Wittitee Cemetery near Kentuckytown. Survived by wife Alice Frisby daughter Mrs Clifford Pheobus sons Charles Marion Paul, five grandchildren, brothers W E Pennell and A L Pennell. Pennell known figure in Whitewright community.
Funeral services for William A. Gus Colvard were held at the Church of Christ at 10 a.m. Saturday, Elder J. R. Waldrum officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. R. R. Waldo directed the arrangements. A longtime Whitewright resident, Colvard worked for local guns and for Vaughn and White gin at Canaan before it was destroyed by a cyclone. He was a skilled mechanic.
Colvard born 1865 in Bledsoe County Tennessee moved to Texas in 1900. Survived by wife Clara Colvard one brother A. T. Colvard of Pikesville Tennessee and three sisters including J A Childress of Whitewright. Out of town relatives Sam Childress Big Spring Edgar and J R Childress Slaton attended.
