Blue Jay Singers Here Wednesday at Negro Methodist

The famous Blue Jay singers of Birmingham Alabama will perform at the Negro Methodist Church next Wednesday evening May 6. J W Scott pastor says a section of seats is reserved for whites and admission costs 10 and 15 cents.

Decoration day will be observed at Wittitoe Cemetery three miles west of Whitewright Sunday May 3. If weather is bad the observance will be the following Sunday announced by George Ball.

Final spring meeting of Friday Literary Club at Mrs May home

The final spring meeting was hosted by Mrs. Ross R May with Mrs May as hostess. New active member Mrs H W Key and associate member Mrs R E Hickman were welcomed, while Mrs A M Bryant resigned. The program covered Texas Centennial history, So Big Texas, Foreign Settlements in Texas, Glimpses of the Centennial, a Dallas district meeting report, and a cream and cake course was served.

Ely 4-H Club Discusses Cotton Program and Tex Centennial Contest

The Ely 4-H Club met Friday night April 24 at its regular meeting place. Sponsor Lloyd Moore spoke briefly on the new cotton program. Members discussed the soil conservation contest at the Texas Centennial and the Bonham encampment in June.

Whitewright Music Club Meets at Hamilton Studio

The Whitewright Music Club held its last fall meeting at Hamilton studio in the grade school. The program on Texas Under Six Flags featured readings, songs, and stories. Mrs J B May of Savoy read a poem, with piano by Miss Sarah Belle Gillett. performances featured Miss Dorothy Hamilton Miss Aileen Pennington Miss Gillett and Mrs T M Johnson. Tommie Chenoweth played Tarentelle by Dallas-born composer Mrs Laud German Pippen. The group voted to observe Music Week May 3 to 9 and hostesses were Dorothy Hamilton Corinne Lewis.

West Circle Baptist Missionary Society Holds Meeting

The West Circle of the Baptist Missionary Society met Monday with Mrs. C J Meador for a social afternoon featuring a white elephant party. Members brought gifts, paid 10c for numbers, and drew for gifts. Fourteen members and one guest attended with refreshments served.

Best male quartette to sing at Anglers Class

Sunday morning features a top male quartet from San Marcos State Teachers College. They perform at 10 o clock for the Anglers Class and again at 11 o clock with a brief sermon on the value of music by the pastor. John H. Pennell aged 58 died at home near Tom Bean early Saturday. Funeral conducted at Presbyterian Church in Tom Bean with Dr. J F Fender and Rev. Jack White. Interment at Wittitee Cemetery near Kentuckytown. Survived by wife Alice Frisby daughter Mrs Clifford Pheobus sons Charles Marion Paul, five grandchildren, brothers W E Pennell and A L Pennell. Funeral services for William A Gus Colvard

Funeral services for William A. Gus Colvard were held at the Church of Christ at 10 a.m. Saturday, Elder J. R. Waldrum officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. R. R. Waldo directed the arrangements. A longtime Whitewright resident, Colvard worked for local guns and for Vaughn and White gin at Canaan before it was destroyed by a cyclone. He was a skilled mechanic.

Notable gunman Colvard dies in Texas funeral

Colvard born 1865 in Bledsoe County Tennessee moved to Texas in 1900. Survived by wife Clara Colvard one brother A. T. Colvard of Pikesville Tennessee and three sisters including J A Childress of Whitewright. Out of town relatives Sam Childress Big Spring Edgar and J R Childress Slaton attended.
