Official gauge at Whitewright city water plant shows .45 inch of rain Tuesday night with reports ranging from three-tenths to one inch at nearby locations. April rainfall so far is 2.58 inches, well below the normal 7.57 for March-April combined.
Vice President Nixon told the United States Chamber of Commerce that the major aim of the administration is to avoid sending American troops to Indochina or anywhere else if possible. He insisted the policy would be firm and united with free world action against communism without war.
L. L. Wendell invites all to Bethel on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm for the First Sunday Singing Convention. He promises class singing with quartets trios duets and solos and notes a Star convention had a full house.
A seven member panel to direct research on smoking and health was named by the tobacco industry. Dr. Clarence Cook Little chairs the group from Roscoe B Jackson Memorial Laboratory Bar Harbor Maine. The industry backed panel pledged funding for any study its scientific advisory board undertakes amid reports of a possible link between smoking and lung cancer.
Texarkana’s Daily News Digest, a five day weekly paper of the International Typographical Union, folds due to economic difficulties after nearly two years in operation. The final issue notes failure to reach self sufficiency as the reason for ceasing publication.
Mrs. Nana Francis outlines a May 7 program for children aged six by Sept. 1, 1954 to start school that fall. (8:30 a.m. assembly, cafeteria lunch, activities in daily school life, nurse prepared booklet, vaccinations offered by county health officials, 1:00 p.m. dismissal, birth certificate or photo copy required if not on census.)
Mrs Gaines Bow of Cald well Idaho renews for another year saying she does not want to miss a copy and looks forward to Mondays edition. R E Burnham of Arlington native of Whitewright also sends payment or asks to bill if needed.
A survey of 46 state governors at a three day briefing finds Eisenhower still strong in public esteem, McCarthy’s support falling, and concern over Indochina with fear of war. Governors cite farm policy and administration actions as key to November, while Republicans worry about House control.
At a Monday night meeting the Chamber of Commerce Board elected Homer Sears to fill a term on the board after O W Barker moved to Tulsa. The finance report showed a year start balance of 84 44 with 39 business memberships and 34 individual memberships raising 567 44 in receipts, 47 25 in expenditures, leaving 520 19. Funds are separate from the merchants party jackpot program, which is self sustaining and sponsored by the chamber. Merchants may donate prizes for Saturday’s cash awards. The homecoming committee led by Mrs Jack Lackey reported Labor Day weekend tentative plans with directors agreeing to assist.
Menu for Monday through Friday lists meals for each day. Monday offers hot beef roast on buns with vegetables and desserts. Tuesday features cheese and pressed ham sandwich, potatoes, salad, apricot short cake, chocolate milk.
Postmaster General Summerfield asked Congress to approve a pay raise plan affecting 400,000 postal field service workers at a cost of 80 million dollars yearly. He said the plan, recommended by George Fry & Associates of Chicago, should replace across the board proposals.

Charlie C. Cates 65, a veteran Whitewright city employee for 33 years, died Monday in a Sherman hospital after a stroke. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Barnheart Chapel with burial in City Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Mattie Skipworth Cates, a son in Illinois, two daughters in Dallas, three brothers and eight grandchildren.
E A McMahon 79 a former Savoy Bonham resident and Whitewright familiar figure died in a Dallas hospital. He was an early rural mail carrier at Savoy and president emeritus of the Savoy College Ex Students Association. Surviving are two sons a daughter a brother and two sisters with former wife Lula Chenoweth named among relatives.

The Senate voted 15 million dollars to Texas and other drouth areas to curb wind erosion. Funds, through an agriculture department program, pay farmers up to one dollar per acre for soil protection work through 1955. Texas had over four million acres with insufficient cover, and over one million acres already damaged.
Bonham Texas Sam Rayburn officially announced Saturday his candidacy for re election to Congress from the fourth district for his 22nd term. He was first elected in 1912 and faces one announced opponent A G McRae of Bonham a former Texas Power and Light Company employee. Other possible candidates have been mentioned but none announced officially.
D. B. Hardeman of Denison leads part time duty as the state headquarters of the Democratic Advisory Council of Texas opens on the Barrett Building’s second floor. Main task is raising funds for the Democratic Digest distribution and a campaign to elect a Democratic Congress with a goal of 70000 dollars this year. Last year Sam Rayburn chaired the drive with Hardeman as field director. this year the council takes over. The state advisory council won approval from the Democratic National Executive Committee in February last year, with councils now in 48 states.
Texas Liquor Control Board inspectors seized seven illicit stills in March, the most in a March total. The operation yielded 2,620 gallons of mash, 104 gallons of moonshine destroyed, and four arrests across Titus, McLennan, Lamar, Bowie and Marion counties.
The Chamber of Commerce committee recommended holding homecoming on Labor Day weekend with a Saturday dance and Sunday picnic. A separate homecoming group was not favored, and Thomas Sears and Mrs. Jack Nossaman were named co chairmen. The Chamber agreed to assist but not finance. Governor Shivers said President Eisenhower is uncertain about a October trip to Texas. The trip would include dedicating Big Bend National Park and addressing the Baptist General Convention of Texas in Fort Worth. Officials indicated October is too uncertain for a firm decision.
