A six week course for men aiming to learn about scouting begins Friday night at the Boy Scout cabin. Chancy Corse of the Sherman Area Council will lead sessions each Friday, with final outdoor sapper. All area men are invited to enroll and experience scout craft, contests, and games.
About 51 people attended the Whitewright Farmers & Merchants Club meeting in the high school study hall last Thursday night. Attendees came from Whitewright and nearby towns including Tren ton Ector Dorchester Bells and Tom Bean. Sam W. Martin of the U S Department of Agriculture Dallas spoke on cotton grading sampling and how to request a re grade by sending a second sample with a 25 cent fee. Ike Morrison of Bonham discussed insect control and conservation. A film on Northern Star cotton was shown and refreshments were served by Mrs Earl Blanton's homemaking group.
Washington confirms United States Air Forces planes are transporting French paratroops from France to Indochina to reinforce Dien Bien Phu. The move follows a French request and fits current policy of aiding allies.
Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company reviewed 150 autos hit by pock-marked windshields and attributed the marks to normal road wear, with flying sand gravel and ice-deicing materials cited as causes. Older, high-mileage cars showed more damage, per W L Tomlinson in Mount Pleasant Michigan.
Sept S. T. Montgomery Jr. announced that the annual pre school day for next year's beginners will be May 7. Mothers of new Whitewright students should bring children to the school at 8 30 AM that morning to acquaint both mothers and children with school life and challenges before entry.
The annual free vaccination for dogs will be held at the agriculture building of the high school next Wednesday, April 28, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. A $1.00 charge applies for the vaccine, with Joe Morgan and vocational agriculture students providing the service.

Monday features tuna and pimieto cheese sandwiches with chips lettuce tomatoes peaches and Dixie cups. Tuesday offers boiled ham mashed potatoes tossed green salad hot rolls butter and syrup. Wednesday serves red beans kraut onions cornbread cherry shortcake and Dixie cups. Thursday presents steak and gravy green beans potatoes and French pastry. Friday includes frozen fish fillets potatoes pineapple salad doughnuts and cho choes.
Chicago reports per capita dairy use rose 11 quarts in 1953, 7½ percent above prewar levels. Americans drank over 642 billion more quarts of milk in 1953 than 1939, according to the 1954 edition of How Americans Use Their Dairy Foods by the National Dairy Council.
A flurry of visits light up North Texas as families from Lindale, Denton, McKinney, Dallas, Sherman, and other cities visited relatives over the weekend. Guests included Florena Williams from Denton, and many accompanied by husbands and children, with extended family gatherings across Bells, Irving, and Capeville.
Mr and Mrs Ned Ayres install cafe fixtures in the Ray building on Main street and plan a City Cafe opening about May 1. The new business will use fixtures and equipment formerly used in Wilsons cafe.
GOP State Chairman Alvin Lane predicted Republicans will field candidates for all major state offices in this year’s elections. Filing deadline is May 3, and by weekend announcements may follow. Nolan of San Antonio is the only announced candidate for state wide office. Lane noted primaries will be run on a volunteer basis with no cross filing of Democratic candidates.
Mrs. Floyd Everheart told The Sun that Whitewright has raised 524.81 of its 600 Red Cross quota and seeks the remaining 75.19 before Monday. Denison and Whitewright are the only county towns not meeting their quotas.

City Commission ordered higher water and sewer rates promising a monthly trash hauling program. The program is underway improving alleys. Homeowners must place cans in alleys before pickup and treat containers to prevent pests. The Sun office alley is being resurfaced to clear traffic from private property.
The second annual Western Week runs April 26 to 30 at Whitewright and nearby schools. F. H. A. and F. F. A. sponsor outfits and rules, with lipstick permits for girls and no shaving for boys. A Friday roundup crowns King and Queen, followed by a variety show featuring Sherman Blue Ridge Bells Denison Ector Trenton Van Alstyne Bonham acts. Admission 35 cents adults 25 cents students and children.
State Highway Commission Chairman E. H. Thornton Jr. urged closing gaps in the farm to market road system. At a public hearing he criticized county boards for funding bias toward voting blocs. He warned the commission may act independently if counties withhold cooperation. He noted self sufficiency depends on 700 vehicles daily and better road usage.

Governor Allan Shivers announced on Monday his bid for a third term as Texas governor subject to the Democratic primary on July 24 1954. He noted family considerations had briefly prompted retirement talk but will seek re election. Shivers has led Texas Democrats including backing Eisenhower and helped carry Texas for the president. Speaker Reuben E Senterfitt said he will comment in a few days on Shivers announcement.
