Whitewright Booster Club directors vote to sponsor a Saturday prize program in the main business district. Cash prizes will be awarded each week, following a successful previous campaign. First distribution set for Saturday May 8.
Texas State Highway Department released a flexible five year program for Grayson and Fannin counties detailing projects if funds allow. Highlights include a four lane U S 75 from Sherman to Denison costing 2 448 000 and widening U S 82 from Sherman to Whitesboro at 1 530 000 with other upgrades along U S 69 and U S 82. The plan aims as a guide to Congress for a wider program and notes many projects will be delayed without adequate revenue. A large farm to market program is expected to be included with an estimated 134 000 000 for the five year period.
Robert Doss seeks the Texas State House seat from Grayson County Place No 1. A 29 year old veteran born in Whitewright, he studied at Texas A M and UT Law aims to end gatekeeping and reduce taxes while improving pensions roads and schools. He pledges honest diligent service and will campaign this summer.
Eight Marines could not carry the body of Pfc. James J. Donnelly Jr at his burial in New Jersey because union pallbearers refused amateurs. The Marines stood in dress uniform while six paid bearers carried the casket after Donnelly died rescuing a wounded comrade on Iwo Jima. He had fought at Bougainville and Guam. The flag was held taut over the casket as it was lowered.
During World War II the occupation of Java by Japanese forces caused the United States and its allies to lose 1,250,000 tons of sugar in supply and trade disruptions.

Funeral services for Mary McLarry 72 were held at 2 p m Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev James I Logan officiating. Burial followed at Cross Roads Cemetery near Whitewright. She died at home Thursday after living in the Desert and Blue Ridge areas. Survivors include brothers L A Terry and T E Terry of Bonham.
Funeral services were conducted at First Baptist Church for W. W. Reeves who died at 8:50 p m Tuesday after a head injury in a Lubbock hospital. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. Reeves born February 18 1904 near Whitewright resided locally most his life. He leaves three sons and siblings.
Mrs Harlowe Rosabel Godwin Ray widow of J D Ray died Sunday in Fort Smith Ark at 2 p m burial two p m Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery conducted by Rev James I Logan First Presbyterian. She was born Leeds Ala May 16 1866 married Oct 1 1882 eight children four surviving Vera Eva W R and Marshall Ray. sisters Mrs T D Ballard and Mrs C S Blanton. The Rays were longtime Whitewright pioneers with Mr Ray building the local light plant and operating a gin later moving to Tishimingo Okla. The note adds government spending on scientific research and development reached about 80 percent of 623 390 000 in the last fiscal year.
Whitewright voters approve 750000 road bonds by 142 to 21 in a countywide tally of 4286 for 317?8 against. ShermanDenison and rural boxes show strong support. Bonds to be sold after official approval. county plans early road work with community committees.

He was born January 13, 1923 in Whitewright and survived by parents, a daughter Louise, seven brothers and six sisters.

A San Angelo war veteran appeared before Federal Judge William H. Atwell charged with violating the servicemen's readjustment act by taking unemployment compensation while employed. The judge jailed him for one hour, to be served between 11 a.m. and noon, so he could return to his construction job for the afternoon shift.
