A Civil Defense program sponsored by the Whitewright Home Demonstration Club will be held at the American Legion Hall at 2 00 p m Friday. Jerry Smith of the Texas Department of Public Safety will speak and show disaster films including tornadoes. Public is invited.
Indian Prime Minister Nehru deplored U.S. intervention in Cuba accusing Washington of fostering arming and backing anti Castro elements. A senior Indian finance official left for Washington to seek 638 million dollars in foreign aid for India this year.
A 10-year-old Negro girl identified as Dolores Smith has entered City Hospital in Memphis to await the birth of a baby expected next month. Relatives say she is married to an 18-year-old farm laborer and they live in Mason, a rural West Tennessee area. The note mentions the youngest mother on record was a 7-year-old Argentine girl with twins.
The Agriculture Department projects 1961 farm net income up by about one billion dollars from 1960, roughly a 10 percent rise to around 12.6 billion. Wayne Stephens died Friday in a Sherman hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were Sunday at Earnheart chapel with Rev. Don Howland and Rev. C. C. Dooley officiating. Burial was at Wittytee Cemetery in Kentuckytown. He was born May 1, 1883 near Whitewright and married Ann Reeves in 1906. Surviving: wife, son J W Buddy Stephens, daughter Iola Phillips, three sisters, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren.
Cecil Davis 61 died Friday in Sherman hospital. Born June 1, 1899 at Pilot Grove, he grew up in Whitewright and moved there as a child. He married Jennie Mae Connelly in 1919 at Trenton, was a World War I veteran, a retired Trenton ginner, and a Methodist. Surviving are his wife, four daughters, three brothers, and 10 grandchildren. Funeral was held in Trenton with burial at Pilot Grove Cemetery.
Funeral services were held in Sherman on Friday for Mrs. E N Gant 64 who died of a heart attack April 19. Born Lillie Bell Flemman April 3, 1897 at Decatur she married Mr Gant in 1918 at Tom Bean. Survivors include her husband two sons a daughter five sisters nine grandchildren one great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Bonn announces Germany will pay the United States 587 million dollars on its postwar debt Friday. The payment advances the schedule from a 30 year plan, leaving the Bonn government owing about 200.37 million dollars after this installment.
A windstorm struck Whitewright around 10 45 PM causing shingles to fly from a roof at Kay Dillons home in East Whitewright and uprooting three trees at Mrs H R Rhodys. A Linda theatre display case glass shattered and trees were stripped citywide. Garner Brothers lumber yard lost its roof and TV antennas were damaged. Rain measured seven tenths of an inch in the west part of town. Damage also reported in Whitesboro Sherman with shattered store windows at Montgomery Ward in Sherman and merchandise swept into the street. a Dallas station echoed the report.
Labor Secretary Goldman said the Kennedy Administration will submit to Congress new jobless aid ideas. The plan may include long term retraining payments and relocation assistance, with cooperation from Health Education and Welfare and state programs. He urged private enterprise to raise productivity to reduce unemployment.
Attorney General Robe rt F Kennedy pledged stern Justice Department action to break up price fixing in American business. He cited recent jail terms for seven electrical executives and urged newspapers to aid in exposing racketeering while noting their limited role compared to district attorneys.
