A school picnic planned for next week on the high school campus includes a downtown parade with vintage 1910 attire and horse drawn vehicles, an old fashioned picnic with games and lemonade, and an auditorium program after dusk. Admission is ten to fifteen cents, with no silks allowed and patches encouraged.
The final book review of the season will be given by Mrs H P Donigan at the Central Christian Church on Sunday at 3 o clock. She will discuss The House Under the Water by Frances Brett Young. Friday Literary Club sponsors the event and invites the public to attend. Past reviews drew large crowds and favorable reception.
Intense hail moved through Greenville early Tuesday causing extensive property and crop damage. A florist reported losing one third of his crop as glass in hothouses and skylights shattered. Roofs on homes were damaged and several businesses suffered broken lights. The storm extended south toward McKinney affecting Sherman as well.
Drs. J. E. and Hazel Nelms, Oklahoma City chiropractors, plan a temporary clinic in Penn apartment house starting Saturday, one block south of First National Bank. Nelms are noted pioneers. J. E. Nelms taught at Carver Chiropractic College. An advertisement with full details appears in this issue.
A severe hailstorm and cloudburst struck Dallas Tuesday night killing three people. Miss Sybil Compton and Mrs. Clara K Cambridge drowned trying to push a flooded car to safety, while Miss Erma E Hicks was rescued after grabbing a tree limb. A 40 year old Alice Berry was found hanging over a fence as waters subsided. The storm damaged windows and roofs, flooded streets, stalled autos, and forced downtown closure, with damage pegged near 1 million dollars. Relief workers aided refugees with food, bedding and shelter through the night.
Congressmen have cut their salaries by 15 percent and shortened their term by two months, with a 25 percent drop in mileage and stationery allowances. Rep Thomas L Blanton of Abilene cites this in response to Joe Jones of Eastland who urged equal cuts for Congress.
A two story school building at Ely seven miles northeast of Whitewright was destroyed by fire Wednesday night around midnight. The second floor housed I O O F activities and three rooms on the lower floor served as school rooms. The fire origin is unknown. The structure and equipment including state owned textbooks were insured for 2050 dollars.
H S Johnson aged 67 died at his daughter Mrs L H Grammer’s home in Mahurin northeast of Whitewright after declining health since June. Born November 25 1865 in Missouri he moved to Texas about 40 years ago settling in Luella. Survived by three children Mrs Grammer Miss Annie Lee Johnson and Claud Johnson. Funeral today at Holloway Cemetery near Luella at 4 o clock. R R Waldo directed.
Oklahoma City report notes the Oklahoma Farmers Holiday Association passed a resolution seeking a moratorium on interest payments for all public bonded indebtedness until commodity prices return to 1929 levels. The action targets debt relief amid price pressures in agriculture.
Texarkana region hit by a tornado killing two residents, John Moseley and Lizzie Rosborough, on farms northwest of Texarkana. Five houses on the Hubbard farm destroyed and more than a dozen injured there. four houses wrecked on the Rosborough place. area spanned seven to eight miles with darkness delaying full assessment. The storm struck about nine in the morning from the west.
The Roosevelt administration, in power under two months, pushes its economy pledge with cuts expected to exceed 30 percent, aiming to save over 1.02 billion of the 4 billion 1934 budget and reduce veterans benefits, department reorganization, federal salaries, and other items, with further economies anticipated.
Miss Tommie Chenoweth led piano students and a rhythm band in a Whitewright grammar school recital held Wednesday evening after rain postponed the original Tuesday date. Assisting were Miss Dorothy Hamilton, the Whitewright Music Club choral group, and a reading by Master Eugene Reeves. Miss Alberta Blanton daughter of Mr and Mrs J A Blanton and John Arledge Jr of Houston wed Saturday morning in Durant Oklahoma The service was conducted by the First Baptist Church pastor They will reside in Houston The bride a Whitewright High School and Lubbock Business College graduate The groom Baylor University graduate employed by Humble Oil Company He is son of Dr and Mrs John Arledge of Mississippi The marriage surprised many friends of the bride.
The Sun announces the fifth Sunday singing convention at Canaan north of Whitewright. The event occurs Saturday night through Sunday with a large crowd anticipated, especially for the Sunday program.
The west end of Main street will gain about 250 evergreen shrubs once weather allows, with planting led by Mrs. Emmet Penn of the Friday Literary Club. Shrubs include abelia nandina privet and juniper soils organized by Foster Nursery Denison. Contributions from the Friday Literary Club Whitewright Music Club Rotary Club City of Whitewright and Kay Kimbell Fort Worth funded the project.
Governor Miriam A Ferguson asks Legislature to abolish the Board of Pardons and Paroles and transfer duties to the Secretary of State. A bill proposes staffing the office at 2400 for a pardon clerk, 1200 for a stenographer, 1100 for expenses and 300 for travel, saving 22600 annually. The board currently has three members with a vacancy from James R. Hamilton's death. Stanhope Henry and J O Woodward serve as active members.
Whitewright and nearby sections have received about three inches of rain since last Friday with light damage so far. Other parts of the state suffered hail and heavy rain, but this area remains largely intact. Farmers seek two weeks of fair weather as much cotton remains unplanted and wet fields hinderwork.
Dorothy Lee Dillon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Dillon and Worthy Matron of the Beta Epsilon chapter of Sigma Iota Chi, was unanimously elected to receive the friendship pen of the sorority. She is a senior at Wayland Junior College in Plainview and granddaughter of Rev. and Mrs. W. A. Kirkpatrick of Whitewright. Her father, Guy Dillon, previously belonged to The Sunforce.
The City Collection Department announces penalties for delinquent taxes: four per cent in April, six per cent in May, eight per cent in June, with ten per cent penalty and four months interest from July 1. Town residents are urged to pay in part or in full during the remaining April days to limit costs.
The Cotton Belt depot freight room was broken into Monday night and snuff valued at about 120 dollars stolen. The crime was found Tuesday morning by Agent D G Coley. The snuff shipment was billed to W T Nicholson grocery and arrived Saturday.
Governor William H. Murray signed a bill allowing homesteading of lands seized by counties for taxes after redemption periods expire. The State School Land Department will manage the parcels, aiming to return thousands of acres to tax rolls, especially in Southeastern Oklahoma. Murray cited the potential vast land availability but could not quantify exact amounts.
The Bells Alliance Company stock at Bells was sold last Saturday to the highest bidder ending an organization started in 1884 with many farmer stockholders. Once a major supplier with three buildings and annual sales over 100000 dollars, it declined as stockholders faded and was finally placed in receivership after years of dwindling business and a harsh downturn.

Madison Wisconsin delegates at the state constitutional convention vote to repeal the Eighteenth Amendment. One woman and fourteen men cast Wisconsin's ballot for repeal, making Wisconsin the second state after Michigan to ratify national prohibition repeal.
The Garland and Whitewright Rotary Clubs hosted an intercity gathering at the Whitewright Presbyterian Church with about 25 Garland guests and Sherman members. The banquet featured music by a six piece orchestra, a mock Rotary banquet, and performances by Mrs. Guy Bullock and Mr. Hoy. The event followed a prior intercity meeting in Garland and leaves the attendance contest at 100 percent for both clubs, extended beyond the original April 1 deadline.
