Whitewright traders expect a big crowd for trades day on the fourth Monday. Spring months bring higher activity with strong demand for pigs calves and all kinds of livestock. Bring items to trade or give away and wear trading clothes for the event.
Data from the Central Statistical Board shows federal relief outlays totaling 14,218,773,000 dollars for 1933 to 1937. Breakdown includes general relief, federal work programs, CCC work, unemployment assistance, rehabilitation loans, emergency public works, and surplus commodity distribution. State and local contributions add about 5,085,000,000 dollars.
Washington report states Vice President Garner purchased a 23,436 acre cattle ranch in Webb County Texas about 100 miles southeast of his home in Uvalde. The price was not disclosed and the sale from J F Sinclair closed yesterday. Garner will split time between Congress recesses at Uvalde and his Texas home. He dismisses retirement speculation despite the purchase.
A group of striking grave diggers protested they cannot compete with a steam shovel. They were removing bodies from an abandoned cemetery slated for a federal housing project. A shovel was hired, half the diggers were dismissed, and the rest went on strike.
In Oakland California D J 94 and C B 98 Handy brothers traveled from Riverside to see their brother Milton Handy 93. The trio say they have never touched liquor tea or salt claiming it as the secret of their long lives.
Former Texas House Speaker Coke Stevenson visiting Whitewright to support his bid for lieutenant governor. He defends a two chamber legislature and highlights his budget and tax laws, including savings of 40 million dollars. Wichita Falls oil man Tom Hunter, a three time governor candidate, announced his return to the Texas governor's race. He criticized the state political machine and vowed to fight for the plain people after touring parts of the state and finding voters sympathetic to his candidacy.
The Board of Pardons and Paroles recommended against clemency for Johnnie Banks who was sentenced to electrocu tion for the murder of a negro girl in Brazoria County. Banks was to be executed early Friday along with John W. Vaughn who killed A. A. Edwards a San Antonio motorcycle officer and Selanes Canedo convicted in the murder of Joseph W. Daly in San Antonio.
A Bonham and Trenton delegation from Fannin County secured temporary designation of a road from Highway 82 three miles west of Bonham to Randolph as a state highway. They were urged to obtain right of way so construction could begin promptly when funds are available.
Collin County agent Jack McCullough explains that farm bill penalties apply only to cotton. Farmers can plant noncotton crops on leftover acreage without penalties but lose cotton payments. To qualify for all payments, producers must manage general and neutral crop acre allocations and use neutral land for specified crops. Collin County expects about 65 000 bales of cotton despite reduced acreage due to improved seed Plantings.
Huntsville report shows 2,966 prisoners received and 2,514 discharged between Dec 31, 1936, and Jan 1, 1937. Harris County led with 279 commitments, Dallas 273, and Bexar 112. Burglary dominates new inmate classifications. ages span 17 to over 70, with most inmates male and many in lower education categories.

Washington reports a new wage hour bill aimed at interstate workers set at 25 cents an hour with annual 5 cent increases to 40 cents. It proposes a 44 hour work week now, dropping to 40 hours in two years, and directs the labor secretary to report violations to the Justice Department. The measure aligns with AFL views and is stricter than the December rejected bill.
Washington The Interior Department offered a three year lease on government grazing land to 100 year old Ned Hillyard a Pomerone Ariz rancher Monday The department said an investigator instructed to determine whether Hillyard should have a long term lease reported Hillyard was alone at his ranch on the date of examination and was engaged in breaking a bucking colt He is remarkably active and I can see no reason for refusing him a lease for a few years at least
Mrs. J F Short died at her Desert home Sunday evening after a stroke. Funeral conducted at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church by Rev Gil bert of Blue Ridge. Burial in Blue Ridge Cemetery directed by Glen Earnheart. Born January 5 1890 in Tennessee the daughter of Mr and Mrs J M Bowers. Came to Texas in 1902 and married in 1924. Survived by husband a son D M Short and her mother, all of Desert.
Myrtle Mae Russell 11 months old, daughter of Mr and Mrs W C Russell south of town, died at 1130 p m Monday in St Vincent's hospital Sherman after a three day illness. Funeral at family home 3 p m Tuesday conducted by Rev J A White of Trenton. Interment Cross Roads Cemetery with Glen Earnheart in charge. Survived by parents and grandparents.
E. L. Hopkins 68, former Whitewright businessman, died after a weeklong illness in Tioga. Funeral held at Tioga. interment Oak Hill Cemetery. Born 1869 in Kentucky, came to Texas in 1888. Survived by wife, children, siblings, and many relatives. Community attendees listed. local plea to spend money in Whitewright.
President Roosevelt, confident Congress will approve his recovery program, plans to devote the next fortnight to preparations for rapid campaign start once appropriations are granted. He will confer with WPA head Harry Hopkins, NYA, CCC leaders and others. The plan envisions 4.5 billion dollars for work relief, public works, flood control and related needs, with added capital for job creation. The House granted 100 million for roads and the Senate 50 million for CCC. both come atop regular budgets. Labor’s Nonpartisan League backed the program, urging widespread calls to lawmakers to pass it quickly.
In Collin County, Deputy U S Marshal Sam C Johnston seized a Kent farm under the Frazier Lemke act. The John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co held notes totaling 6717 08 dating from 1936. Appraisers valued 92.33 acres at 5083 65. sold to the insurer March 1 1938 for 6000. The Kents had sought debt composition and time extension, which the company refused, prompting the writ of possession and seizure.
U S cotton exports rose in March to 426000 bales valued at 22632000, up from February totals of 399000 bales and 20731000. For eight months August to March, exports amounted to 4657000 bales valued at 257544000.
Albany report says frozen human blood is shipped to Spain for transfusions behind the lines because volunteers there are half starved and their blood is too thin for use. A separate note advises cabbage should be cooked till tender when tested with a fork, as overcooking alters color and makes it indigestible.
