An Easter cantata titled The Thorn Crowned King will be presented at the First Baptist Church Sunday evening by choirs from Whitewright city churches. Directed by Mrs. Guy Hamilton the program features solos by Mrs. Paul Ryan and Mrs. Roby Childress, duets, a quartet, and a final chorus by the full choir.
The federal crop reporting board forecasts winter wheat production at 725,707,000 bushels for April 1 conditions, up from last year and above the 10-year average. Harvested area seen at 49,900,000 acres with an estimated yield of 12.6 bushels per acre. Prospects improve in most regions except parts of the Great Plains where subsoil moisture remains short and future weather will largely determine the crop.
Washington experts working in Agriculture Department labs predict cotton stockings with silk-like appearance and durability. Ruth O'Brien, head of textiles division, told a House committee that further study of spinning and knitting could yield elastic, attractive hosiery as durable as silk, with a cotton stocking already produced but not widely sold.

The Department of Agriculture announced a roughly two million acre increase in the cotton allotment for 1938 to aid Southern farmers. The added acres target small farms, farms with reduced allotments, and those needing higher ratios of tillable land to qualify for fair shares. The final total depends on a county level study.

Rayburn Morris 38, Sherman Texas cafe owner, was sentenced to life for the 1933 killing of Jack Hammock near here. Malcom Keene of Ivanhoe Texas testified Morris led the hijacking plan, and Bill Horne of Bonham Texas testified he bought the liquor. Jury deliberated 30 minutes.
Barbara Rose water of the Daily Nebraskan asked 15 representative men students why coeds go to college. The most common answer given was that coeds go to college to marry us.
The County Line Singing Convention will be held at Canaan four miles north of Whitewright next Sunday afternoon starting at 1:30. The Vaughan quartet will attend and W. O. Stamps will send a quartet, announced by W. C. Brown, president of the association. All who enjoy good singing are invited. Typewriter paper at Sun office.
The local Boy Scouts held their annual Court of Honor Tuesday night at the scout cabin. Scout Commissioner McLean of Sherman attended while several committee members were absent. Recipients included Billy Jack Harper and Roby Magers second class Otto Russell and Paul Simmons first class Hamilton Vestal Robert Simmons Davis Parrish and Bob Sears merit badges. Refreshments for 28 were served after the business session. Childress Pharmacy supplied ice cream and a scout mother donated angel food cake.
Gen. M C Tyler testified the Denison Texas site on the Red River is a premier flood control and power project for the Mississippi watershed. Estimated total cost 54 million dollars with flood control needs around 32.25 million and 10 million for power dam height. About 1.4 million acre-feet dead storage and 5.9 million acre-feet flood storage planned. Dam would sit seven miles upstream from Denison, 190 feet high and 2 1/2 miles wide.
A survey of 100 farm families at Iowa State College shows food clothing and automobiles dominate the budget. Automobiles rose as a major item, with the farm spending $100 more on cars in 1937 than 1936, while total living expenditures ranged from $348 to $3,388.
The social security board studies the advisability of a federal health insurance program. The measure would have the federal government or states pay benefits to wage earners and low paid workers out of work due to sickness, without providing medical service or hospitalization. Cost would likely be covered by a payroll tax shared by employers and employees, akin to the old age annuity tax.
The Sherman court records show an installment plan for fines with a $40 down payment and monthly balances. Don Holcomb pleaded guilty to a liquor charge and was fined $100 plus $27.20 costs by County Judge Jake J. Loy.
President Roosevelt will deliver a fireside chat at 9 30 p m Thursday on his new recovery and relief program urging strong action amid the business slump. Observers expect a frank discussion of expenditures and a pitched battle with conservative party members in Congress while administration aides foresee a moderate but direct tone. The broadcast will reach WFAA listeners and be carried by multiple stations.
Tim McDonald 38 of Cooper Delta County died in a Sherman hospital from injuries after a car was struck by a Texas and Pacific passenger train six miles east of Sherman on Sunday night. W T Alley 48 died Monday night from a fractured skull and chest injuries. Jack Briscoe remained hospitalized with multiple injuries.
Karl A. Crowley quit yesterday as solicitor of the Post Office Department and may win an administration endorsement for Texas governor. He had just entered the race two weeks earlier, resignation effective April 19. Postmaster General Farley praised him in his resignation letter and will host a testimonial dinner Thursday with Secretary Hull and Senator O Mahoney among speakers.
Little damage to crops in Whitewright from the last freeze. Some corn nipped by frost and a few farmers plan replanting on 50 acres. Vegetable gardens largely hurt, some losses, while fruit largely escaped. April rainfall totals and recent snows eased impact. Spring floods and delayed planting permits complicate farming plans.
Houston Police Chief C A Williams said the department will cooperate with Sheriff Norfleet Hill and Ranger Captain Hardy Purvis in a campaign against the citys 2000 marble tables. The drive was ordered by Gov James V Allred and Col H H Carmichael of the State Department of Public Safety.
Fort Worth. Tom Daly night club proprietor pleaded guilty to operating slot machines at his club and was fined $100. District Attorney Will R. Parker sought an order to destroy six machines seized in a raid by a Texas ranger last month.
Wilbur K. Potter testified that Col. E H R Green paid only federal income taxes and Florida officials called him a professional tax dodger. The inquiry, led by John S. Flannery, seeks the legal residence of Green who died in 1936 as four states pursue a 5 million dollar inheritance tax. The Florida comptroller recalled Green moving from Texas to New York in 1911 and joked about a Texas rent dispute over his stored effects.
Demonstration at the New York Electrical Society showed voice level indicators for speakers. S. K. Wolf of New York presented bulbs that turn blue for mumble, green when the last balcony hears clearly, and red if the voice is too loud. Hungarian boys at Easter chase girls down village streets, attempting to douse them with perfumed water.
A sunrise Easter service will be held at Central Christian Church Sunday at 5 30 am with all city churches in cooperation. The program includes quiet music, readings by local pastors, congregational hymn, prayers, solos, and an address by Rev. Joe M. Connally. Denison ministers lead the service with postlude God Be With You.
Cotton Belt Railroad officers and a party from St. Louis Pine Bluff Tyler and other cities traveled by special train to Whitewright and met with local agent J A Bixler. The visitors included Daniel Upthegrove president F W Green vice president Judge Berryman Henwood trustee W J Miller superintendent of motive power E M Post VP and general superintendent W S Hanley chief engineer W C Nall and others.
Senate investigator Col Lawrence Westbrook says cotton growers lost millions through underrating of several million bales in government pools. Testifying before the Agriculture Committee he blamed low grade and staple ratings by the American Cotton Cooperative Association. Karl Karsten noted reclassification of 1.6 million bales showed underrating by the ACCA.
Washington announced the division by states of 6,000,000 acres the AAA aims to retire from cultivation this year and return to grass. Administrator H R Tolley said county committees in ten states are working with farmers to meet goals, part of compliance in the new farm program. Eligible cooperators would receive 50 cents an acre for land taken out of cultivation, with Texas allotted 425,000 acres among others in the Northern Great Plains and Southern States.
The bankrupt broker Richard Whitney was sentenced to 5 to 10 years for grand larceny. The report by Dr. Walter Bromberg notes his IQ on an army alpha test at 174, placing him in the 99th percentile, while labeling him unimaginative and sometimes stubborn and unlikely to think he could break the law.
