New Texas Auto Law to Register Vehicles Start July 1 1917
A new statute requires all automobile and motor vehicle owners to register annually with the State Highway Commission beginning July 1 1917. Taxes are 55 cents per horsepower for equipment, 3 dollars per motorcycle, and at least 730 per gramme for autos. Dealers pay 135 dollars. First demonstration car tax 5 000 for each additional up to five. Out of state owners get 30 days exempt then must register. penalties include 10 to 25 dollar fines per day for unregistered operation. Grayson County receives 50 percent of state tax for roads and bridges upkeep. Numbers issued statewide to prevent duplicates.
