The region logged 4.66 inches of rain since Sunday with a heavy Tuesday night deluge washing fields and breaking terraces. First quarter rainfall reached 1.98 inches, 1941 total to April 10 stood at 7.89 inches, aiding moisture but delaying crops as cool weather persists.
County Clerk Grady Thompson was notified this week that all candidates for public office must file an affidavit stating belief in the present representative form of government and support for the U S and Texas constitutions. Cletus Coy Henslee aged 23 of Tyler was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of refusing to report for a physical examination under the Selective Service Act. He was to appear in Henderson on March 4 for examination.
The destroyer Kearney, torpedoed near Iceland on October 17, has fully repaired and is back in operation with the fleet. Navy officials announced Monday.
F M Echols was elected mayor of Whitewright for the 14th consecutive term with 55 votes cast Tuesday. Since 1921 Whitewright has had commission form government and only one city administration change in 21 years. Echols also serves as city manager alongside his mayoral duties.
The War Production Board barred new construction of nonessential housing roads and commercial buildings. Projects under way may be halted if materials could serve the war effort. The rule takes effect Thursday and bans residential work costing 500 or more without government permission, and agricultural construction over 1000 requires prior approval.
In Milan a window display of two hams drew a near riot as ration-strained Italians debated if the meats were real or a joke. Police intervened after traffic blocked the street and authorities confirmed the hams were genuine and legally acquired. The owner was ordered to remove the display from public view.
Gov. Coke Stevenson proclaims May 17 as I am American Day and urges patriotic groups to conduct exercises stressing citizenship.
