Shoes and Coal Pay for Christmas in Long-ago McKinney
In 1900s McKinney, two boys barter for shoes at 75 cents per single shoe and 1.50 per pair. They haul coal on a gondola for 2.50 a load, endure blistered hands, and learn a vendor’s box sign misled them. They buy mismatched right-foot shoes, swap, and end with a self-made fit under father’s guidance.
