Whitewright school board trustees race yields first woman winner

Incumbent Narvin Alexander led Whitewright voters with 277 votes as 12 candidates sought three seats. Write-in Bill Dyer drew 235 votes and Mrs Linda Sullivan second woman on ballot captured 136. Jerry Tapp 125, James England 96, Dan LeDane 79, with ten other candidates. Board officials later canvassed results naming Alexander Dyer Sullivan winners.

Whitewright council swears in new members and tackles town issues

The Whitewright City Council, led by Mayor Dick Walker, administered the oath to Dr. Steve Sullivan O A Bennett and Mike Herber. New vote totals show Sullivan 227, Bennett 199, Herber 264 with write ins Chester Slaughter 15 Homer Ryan 18 Aline Anderson 1 Sonny Smith 4 J B Thornhill 1 Joe Cure ton 1. Florence Lewis of the Community Club urged condemned houses to curb fire and health hazards. The council approved fire plugs for Bill Holloway's Hwy 69 expansion at about 350 each, with Holloway laying 6 inch water lines at his expense. Construction on the new city complex began and bids will follow after plans finish. Street repairs gain top priority with daily city crew work and 17 000 available for streets plus a possible 115 000 HUD grant. Residents within 300 feet of the sewer line will be tied to it within 21 days of notification. The dog problem drew comment with funding and a dog catcher pound noted as needed but not pursued.

Whitewright First National Bank Deposits Jump 11 Percent

Whitewright First National Bank reported deposits at March 31 of 9,015,439 up from 7,743,576 a year earlier, a gain of 1,271,863. Loans stood at 6,600,596 as Grayson County banks collectively show strong local economic growth.

Beatrice Hunter Heads 200 Club Meeting Seeks 4-H Leaders

March 31 meeting of the 200 Club saw Mrs Beatrice Hunter preside and present a request for volunteer 4-H adult leaders. Robert Warren agreed to serve as a leader. The chamber read a request for Woman of the Year Man of the Year and Farmer of the Year nominees. Edwin Badgett urged voting participation. Twenty members attended with games and refreshments. Regular meetings are Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Visitors welcome.

The WMU Royal Service program met Monday at First Baptist Church. Mrs. John Stevens opened with prayers and Mrs. Florence Lewis led the business meeting.

Alfred Jewett joins Local Police Force

Alfred Jewett aged 37 has joined Whitewright Police as patrolman, replacing Troy Adams who resigned for a Tom Bean post. Jewett, married to Terry with three children, will work the evening shift and previously served with the Marines San Francisco police department and as a deputy sheriff at the San Francisco airport.

Five Whitewright Students Qualify for UIL Regional Meet

Five Whitewright High School students earned spots in the UIL Regional meet at Tarleton State University after strong showings at the District contest held at Paris Junior College on March 29. Darlene Reynolds won first in science, Kenny Buchanan third. Judy Guffee and Trena Jarvis each second in ready writing and typing respectively, Melinda Jester second in poetry, with Julie Johnson named best actress and Bart Bodine in the all-star cast for the one-act play.

Visitor Injured As Car Rams Rear of Truck

Mrs. W G Moore, formerly Wilma Harper of Whitewright, suffered bruises when her leased car rear ended a large truck trailer on Grand Avenue. Her husband escaped injury. X rays showed no fracture. She praised local help from Roy Blanton, Jack Meador, Patsy Smith, and Joe Griffis. Moore, a 1922 Whitewright graduate, recalled the town’s changes after Grayson College became a high school.

New D Q Quick Stop Opens Friday in Whitewright

Bill Whicker announces the D Q Quick Stop will open at 7 a m Friday April 8 with groceries drinks ice cigarettes picnic supplies ice cream bread milk frozen foods produce and gas soon after. Parking available between Dairy Queen and store on Hwy 160. Open daily 9 a m to 10 p m with hot popcorn magazines coffee and a sit down area. Grand opening celebration planned later this month.

Scouts Swim At College

Several Boy Scouts in troop 42 enjoy swimming sessions at Austin College each Saturday morning. Participants include Michael Childers, Terry Lankford, Eddie Lankford, Duncan Orr, Gary Owens, Fred Greer, Nicky Kent, David Pryor and Dwight Owens. They work odd jobs around town to fund summer camp tuition and gear. Call Scoutmaster Butch Morgan for details.
