The local Masonic Lodge celebrates its 100th anniversary on Saturday April 7 with attendance expected from neighboring lodges Grand Lodge officials and local members. Dinner at 6:30 p m and programs at 8:00 p m will be held in the Whitewright High School gymnasium and lunch room.
The small town newspaper reports Mr. X was stricken at the cemetery near his aunt’s grave. His sudden death cast a pall of sadness over the funeral, leaving mourners to remember his passing and the shock of the moment.
Reverend C A Roberts a nationally known youth evangelist will headline the spring revival at First Baptist Church April 16 22. Bill Smith will direct music. Pastor Newton Cole says the focus will be church wide with emphasis on youth. Roberts has led many youth and general revivals across America.
President Eisenhower indicated he might sign a farm bill that includes some provisions he dislikes. He declined to state whether he would compromise with supporters of high fixed price supports, saying he won’t veto a bill with some bad parts if the overall effect is positive. Conferees work on a compromise with general agreement on a soil bank plan, but oppose a return to rigid supports for major crops.
The U S Food and Drug Administration warned the public against the Hoxsey cancer treatment offered at Dallas and Portage Pa as a worthless remedy. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals based on FDA evidence issued the warning signed by Commissioner George P Larrick.
The 1956 Official Highway Travel Map for Texas is now available. State High way Engineer D C Greer says the map reduces topographical relief to boost readability and accommodates growing mileage. It includes parks, historical sites, roadside facilities, altitudes, and Highway Travel Information Bureaus with pictorial Texas scenes.
Oklahoma City authorities say the state barber board filed a district court motion to stop beauty operator Mrs. Cordelia Campbell from cutting men’s hair for 50 cents. The board had set a $1 minimum last July and criticized her undercutting of the barber trade.
Four youths including three from Irving and a 16 year old Savoy juvenile were charged with cattle and horse thefts in Fannin County. The suspects were arrested in Irving and Bonham after witnesses tied them to thefts dating from October 1955 including three cattle from Homer Evans and two horses from C R Johnson and Pascal Farley.
The week offers hot pork roast with gravy and sides on Monday. Tuesday features cheese and pork sandwiches with potato chips and cinnamon rolls. Yale scientist Edwards S. Deevey Jr. warns that humans will compete with robins for food if population growth continues. He cites human efficiency in using Earth's plant production at about a tenth of a percent and foresees forests giving way to farms, seas farmed, and energy advances freeing us from chlorophyll bondage.
London reports an electrically operated mechanical bricklayer demonstrated in Warsaw last week. The device, claimed to lay 60 000 bricks per hour and spread mortar automatically, is operated by one person and can build walls of any thickness and height.
Senator Kefauver of Tennessee drew a strong showing in Wisconsin with 42 percent of the vote in a split primary as Eisenhower led with about 55 percent. The results bolster Democratic hopes for Midwest farm states though observers caution Kefauver’s gains do not guarantee a November victory.
The United States government disposed of its butter surplus largely by donations and sales at a loss of about 300 million dollars, moving over 858 million pounds to foreign relief, charitable homes, schools, the Army, and industrial use. Only about 33.5 million pounds remain, with no surplus now, though further purchases may occur. The article also notes the first railway from Quincy granite quarries began 1826 and finished 1927.
The Methodist Commission on Education outlined the annual joint Vacation Bible School. Rev John W Polk announced June 9 to 17 as the tentative dates. Steering committee members include Mrs S T Montgomery Jr Mrs James C Bryant and Miss Carol Bush. A workshop for workers will be held at First Methodist Church Sherman on April 19.
In Waco, Russell W. Bryant of the Texas Press Association argues that any limit on spending for political ads violates constitutional rights. Vernon T. Sanford seeks immediate appeal to test Texas Election Code advertising restrictions after a $76 ad spend in 1954 for Ben Ramsey's lieutenant governor bid. The Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin issued a writ of habeas corpus to Sanford to challenge the law's limits.
Laredo publisher Presc ott Allen led a "cleanup campaign" at the Texas Capitol with about 15 listeners. He urged the ouster of “filthy, robbing politicians” and claimed a 4,000 mile trip to push for a cleaner Texas. Two volunteers joined him with brooms as he toured the steps and urged church attendance to rise.
In Marfa Kate Davis aged 17 contracted chicken pox and was contagious. Her 16 year old brother Tommy followed. Their cocker spaniel Freckles then showed symptoms. The piece notes Amber as a fossil resin and mentions preserved specimens from 163 plant species and over 800 insect species.
Whitewright voters reelect Mayor Russell R Summers to a fourth term in a Tuesday city election with 109 votes cast. The contest was uncontested and unusually high for a small city. Three Whitewright Independent School District trustees will be chosen Saturday with Lackey Clark and Holloway as candidates.
Olan R. VanZandt, Sherman attorney, announced his bid for State Representative from District 49F covering Grayson and Cooke Counties. Incumbent D. B. Hardeman will not seek reelection. VanZandt previously served four House terms 1927–1935 and was state senator 1935–1943. He was Grayson County attorney 1945–1947. Also running are Tony Konioth of Sherman and Robert Rylee of Denison.
Housewives who employ domestic help must report wages and pay a 4 percent Social Security tax if they pay $50 or more in any calendar quarter. Employers must file quarterly, with forms available from revenue or Social Security offices. 1954 tax changes exempt annual income reports, but do not affect Social Security reporting requirements.
Washington announces a two cent federal fuel tax refund for farmers on gasoline diesel and special fuels used in farming. The refunds cover Jan 1 through June 30 with an annual total near 60 million dollars about 12 dollars per farmer for 5 million farmers. Applications close October 1. refunds limited to fuel used by farmers or workers hired on their farms.
