Lewis denounces miners grief as fake strike
Rep A L Reeves Jr of Missouri told the House that John L Lewis did not act to safeguard the dead in the Centralia Illinois mine disaster and labeled the UMWA mourning period a veiled strike. Lewis planned to testify on the disaster and mourning amid a Supreme Court cited restraining order. Reeves cited a federal report urging mine reforms Lewis possessed since last November.

In Whitewright, Marshall Hasty and Edwin Badgett were elected city commissioners for a two year term. Roby Childress, a six year incumbent, was defeated by 11 votes as 188 ballots were cast, the largest tally in years. Five names appeared on the ballot with Childress 95, Hasty 125, Kaiser 28, Williams 12, Badgett 106, plus five write-ins.

Senate OKs teacher pay bills to bolster schools
