Fashion and domestic crafts in a late 19th century column
A long column on feminine fashion and home arts covers satin pillow covers with crimson and gold embroidery, belt and sash trends, gloves and hats, and an era of reform in dress. It notes a peculiar Paris hair study practice, widow and marriage anecdotes, health and longevity by marriage, and assorted society notices, including actress bios and domestic curiosities.
New Portraits and Judgments on George Eliot Life
A Chicago-based note discusses a newly acquired but unsigned likeness of Marian Evans, known as George Eliot, and remarks on her self-perceived ugliness and private resistance to portraiture. It contrasts her with Barbara Bodichon, noting their divergent beauty and intellect as reflected in their friendship and letters. The piece previews a forthcoming biographical work tracing Eliot’s life and the domestic life with Lewes.
