Leonidas Pickett, a Howard county farmer, admits to burying his savings in a sheet iron box on his farm. After cash totaling 1300 dollars disappeared, he failed to locate the box when digging. He later hired detectives who revealed the loss, confirming the remarkable case to neighbors.
Joseph Anthony age 75 died at the Bartholomew County Poor Farm and was buried in a lot bought by his wife who left him 13 years ago. Once a prosperous farmer valued at about $10,000, he drank heavily, sold land in a divorce, and spent his money in liquor. He died of Bright's disease after years of hardship, with four children who did not attend the funeral. No services were held at the grave or county home.
Assessors have boosted values by as much as 50 to 60 percent across the county and Newcastle. The county board of equalization will meet June 3 to hear property owners disputing these inflated estimates. City business district saw large hikes and residences often double prior assessments. Property owners protest the inflated figures and plan to appear before the board.

Fred Brinegar aged 25 allowed a stranger to ride in his buggy and was attacked and robbed. His horse returned home with Brinegar unconscious in the buggy and head wounds. The victim’s condition is serious. He lost 3100 a watch and a jeweled pin in the assault.
Washington-Olive Weber, a high school girl, eloped to Lawrenceville Iowa with Floyd Tolbert a factory employee but were refused a license after the clerk received a message from the girl's mother. The disappointed lovers returned to Washington.

A labor dispute at the Gibson railroad yards two miles from Hammond erupted Monday afternoon, injuring 25 workers, mostly Hungarians, with some not expected to survive. Police arrested three ringleaders as bricks clubs and knives were used. Ambulances transported the injured to Hammond for treatment.
Isaac Stephenson of Marinette swept every Republican vote in the caucus to succeed resigned Senator John C Spooner. The joint assembly Friday ratified the nomination by a large turnout with officers and judges present. Stephenson’s term ends March 4, 1909. He is a lumberman banker and longtime La Follette ally.

Washington reports an ICC circular ruling that shippers cannot receive tariff preference when moving goods over another carrier. The ruling notes fuel and other essentials might justify preference to keep trains moving, but generally carriers must pay legal tariff rates to the destination.
The heir to the Spanish throne, Alfonso of Asturias born May 19, was baptized in the private chapel at Madrid's palace with a grand ceremony. Names given to the child were Alfonso Por Cristino Eduardo Francisco Guillermo Carlos Enrique Eugenio Fernando Antonio. Washington Gaston Philip, heir to an old Washington family, is charged with the murder of cab driver Frank MacAboy. He allegedly shot the cabbie during a quarrel over a fare while both were under the influence of liquor.

A government inquiry led by Herbert Knox Smith accuses Standard Oil of a 35 year pattern of monopolization through railroad discrimination and unlawful devices. It claims control of refining, retail, and pipeline transport, with 4 percent of crude input and 86 percent of illuminating oil output in 1904, built on rail and pipeline leverage and suppression of rivals.
In Washington the American Baptist Missionary Union passed resolutions urging Baptists to give one tenth of income to advance Christian work and pressed the president to study delays in settling the Kongo question.
