New Durham township voters approved stone road improvements by large margins in Weatville and Otis precincts. The project plans 7,747 miles of highway at an estimated cost of 30,175.10, with construction to begin Sept 1 barring delays.}
A small cyclone southeast of Westville struck near Alida on the Monon and B and O roads, tearing a half mile wide swath. The event damaged telegraph lines and poles, with several thousand dollars in property loss but miraculously few injuries reported.

He was prominent in Masonic circles and was buried Wednesday by Excelsior lodge No 41 with Knights Templar escort. Westville Masons were invited to attend.
Joseph McCord of this place writes from the Lafayette Soldiers Home about a Fourth of July celebration. Guns fired at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm, the village decorated, the declaration read, speeches and songs, and the Sunday school joining in. He praises the commander and notes improvements making the home pleasant with good beds and food. He says contentment there equals heaven on earth.
Warm weather after last week's rains boosts crops with farmers busy plowing corn and harvesting wheat and rye. Ed Sears and wife visited Woodville in Porter county during the fourth. Clarence Slade and wife stayed with Phillip Brown in Coburg. Mrs. Frank Howell was ill late last week. Emory Carpenter and family visited George Stoner in Porter county. Charley Sears and wife stayed with his in law in Porter county. Many residents spent the fourth in LaPorte. Local debates urge support for good roads and a large win for stone roads in New Hampshire township. Cora Sears returned to work at Lowenstine Store in Valparaiso after visiting family here.
Lea cliffs Herrold, wife of Homer Herrold, died in Thatcher after five years of illness and declining health. Born August 4, 1858 in Keokuklows, she moved with her parents to Porters county in 1861 and lived nearby. She leaves two daughters, one son, her father, and a sister. Her funeral was held Friday at 1 PM at the M E B church, led by Rev. Rodgers, with the Rebekah lodge conducting rites and interment in Westville cemetery.
A Plymouth farmer recalls a silver dollar passed among merchants, neighbors and a Chicago mail order house over ten years. He says the coin never returns to him and will never pay taxes or help build up their town again.
In Cleveland a mortgage held by Charles F. Lefmann of Laporte Ind. is challenged by Mrs Louise K Brill of Laporte. The cross petitioner seeks alimony arguing her maintenance suit was pending before the mortgage and thus the mortgage to Lefmann is fraudulent and void. The case stems from Brill troubles years ago with Joseph W Brill now of Chicago. Judge Wing presides in the U S court.

Funeral held Tuesday at 11 oclock from the M E Church with Rev Rodgers officiating. He leaves five brothers.
