Retreat of Weade from Rapidan to Manassas Junc

News recounts Gen Lee plan to move A P Hill west of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad toward Manassas Junction to trap Meade retreating from the Rapidan while Ewell marches on his flank. Citations describe Brandy Station clashes, Meade’s forces crossing the Rappahannock, Stuart’s bold reconnaissance and rescue mission, Bristow engagement, and the final retreat to the Rappahannock with about 1000 killed or wounded and near 2000 prisoners taken. Meade’s headquarters shifted and rail lines damaged. The report credits Confederate cavalry with major fighting and claims nine tenths of prisoners captured by Stuart's forces.

A Federal View of Gen Lee Campaign Analysis

A New York Times letter outlines Meade and Lee's late campaign, detailing rapid maneuvers from Warrenton to Bristoe, the series of clashes near Centreville, and Warren's daring defense. It notes Lee's retreat after Bristoe, Meade's eagerness for battle, and the army’s modest losses but heavy horse casualties, with strategic shifts toward Washington and future operations along the James River.
