Trego County High School Offers Broad Curricula

Trego County High School presents English and music by Jean MacNeil and Emerson Williams. It is accredited by the State Board of Education and the North Central Association, with leaders including Minnie ONeil and Geo. M. Afford. A recital by Miss MacNeil and Mr. Williams is set for Thursday in WaKeeney, with tickets via WaKeeney Drug Store. Dr. F W Swearingen will be in WaKeeney on September 23 at the Penny Hotel.

Trial of State v Hutzel and SWW cases drags in court

The state’s case against S M Hutzel for attempted fraud occupied three court days with a guilty verdict and appeal noted. Separate juries were granted for each SWW defendant to extend proceedings as attorney Caroline A Lowe pursues appeals and tactics. Five naturalization hearings occurred including Margheim who did not appear. Bower denied due to wartime alien enemy exemption and Rasek Tauscher Landbower continued until peace treaty or permit.

Fire at City Light Plant Disrupts Service

A late night blaze at the city light plant disturbed residents around 10 40 p m. Fire officials extinguished the flames near the exhaust pipe on the Fairbanks Morse engine with nearby hose carts preventing major damage. The plant remained out of service until Thursday afternoon as water and a wet switchboard halted operations. Wa Keeney firefighters request ladders axes and better bell repairs and urge voluntary tax to fund needed gear.

Caught at Wakeeney in high speed car chase

Sheriff DeBoer acted on a Salina tip to arrest two men driving a certain automobile. Deputy Fox, Lee Nelson, and a quick chase at the Fair Grounds ended with the pair halted at Franklin street and Russell avenue. The older suspect, William Mozingo, was wanted on a rape charge in Kansas City. the other man was released.

Trego County Fair Sees Busy Week Despite Rainy Start

The 1920 Trego County fair extended into Saturday with fair weather the last three days. Attendance met expectations as thrilling events continued daily including county trot races potato races and pony races. WaKeeney teams dominated baseball with wins over Collyer Ellis and Ransom and a standout WaKeeney defense in a near perfect game by Krhut.

Next Sunday services at the Presbyterian church include a morning sermon and a congregational meeting where the treasurer will present the quarterly report. Evening programs offer Christian Endeavor and preaching. Tonight at 8 p.m. a dramatic entertainment Three Scenes from the Life of Joseph starring Guilford Hall of Kansas City, admission 25 cents.

History of Treog County Resources and Fort Downer

A historical sketch describes Trego County geology with white magesion limestone along the Smoky Hill and tributaries and soft magnesion limestone near Satine river and Big Creek used in the courthouse opera house block and railway depot. It notes hard conglomerate rock in foundations and native lime shipped west. Yellow ochra and gypsum occur along the Saline. the Smoky Hill route era began about 1857. Fort Downer, 1863, protected the route. in 1866 Indians besieged, the garrison largely perished after three days. the narrative ends with to be continued.
