Terrifying August Insect Plague Ravages Kansas Nebraska
The 1873 74 period brought an unprecedented grasshopper invasion across northeastern Kansas and southeastern Nebraska. A bright noon sky turned to a swarm of hopper like silver and gold particles followed by vast destruction. Crops livestock and even fences and clothing were eaten. Relief efforts formed. communities improvised ferocious pest control using oil and improvised iron pans. Farms suffered long-term ruin with famine threats and economic collapse, yet communal aid and resilience emerged amid hardship.
