Last Roll Gail Capt James Miles Welch Dies at 12:15 AM
Captain James Miles Welch died at his home 622 West Tenth Street at 12:15 in the morning, after a complication of troubles. Born in Curwensville, Pennsylvania in 1836, he served in Company K of the Twentieth Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteer Corps, rising from second lieutenant to captain on March 21, 1863, and transferring to the veteran reserve corps June 28, 1863. He was wounded at Antietam and was once a Libby prisoner. His Lincoln-signed captain’s commission is on record. Welch settled in Kansas in 1878, served as county commissioner for three terms and probate judge for two, and owned a large ranch near WaKeeney. He leaves a wife, five daughters, and one son. Funeral from his residence Sunday at 2:30, burial in Topeka cemetery.
