Cattle feeding studies highlight Kansas calf tests

From Kansas State Agricultural College at Manhattan and June 9 the fourth annual cattlemen's meeting reported results from six month tests of corn and kafir for beef production. Prof W A Cochel led research with 100 Hereford calves in six lots showing profits up to 15.21 per steer with total weight gains of 343 pounds and 441.9 pounds in two groups. A hyperimmune serum to prevent blackleg was announced by Prof Schoenleber, claiming effectiveness in over 20 000 calves. Discussions on pasture improvement and financing the cattleman capped the program with remarks by Dr Waters and other college officials.

Arrivals of cattle were much larger than expected and the market showed a weaker tendency except for dry lot steers. Prices ranged from 6.50 to 10.75 with most 3.25 to 10.25, and cows and heifers were limited but steady. Stockers and feeders were in demand with prices up to 3.50 for stockers and feeder prices rising slightly.

Union Pacific to Spend Million on Road to Denver

Union Pacific officers approved about 1,000,000 for improvements on the Kansas City to Denver line. Ballasting with Sherman granite between Oakey and Ellis will complete the track to Limon, Colorado. Total upgrades include 90-pound steel relaying, new steel bridges at 125,000, and electric block signals between Salina and Hillis for 175,000.
