Sergeant Wilson recruiting officers from Ellis drills guard units along the line. A battalion will be formed with Hays Ellis Ogallah Wa-Keeney and Coll yer companies. Soldier Chas Shain writes from Fort Flagler Washington on Mother's Day describing quarantine due to scarlet fever in three men, morale and routine. He notes dismounting 12 inch mortars for use in France, training in infantry and artillery, and hopes to reach France within four months. He recounts a Mother’s Day meal, praises U S government and officers, mentions a ball game against a Japanese team, a prank with a late riser, and daily inspections. he ends with relief at army life and a grim wish to join earlier.
