A memoir-like reflection recalls a New Year eclipse on January 1 1889 and an August 1869 solar darkening. Witnesses from six states describe their days during the eclipse while noting war service and objections to wearing uniforms, ending with a critique of perceived principle versus prejudice.
Sergeant Wilson recruiting officers from Ellis drills guard units along the line. A battalion will be formed with Hays Ellis Ogallah Wa-Keeney and Coll yer companies. A major will lead the battalion with headquarters to be selected. Wa-Keeney seeks ten new recruits as members leave for regular service. Apply to J. H. Heckman soon. Pure home made lard at Bakers.

Epworth League Rally set for June 18 and 19 at the M E church features morning devotional services and service flag placement. speakers include Rev. W L Frye Prof J H Niesley Miss Elsie Hughes and Rev J A Westerman with programs on war time, roundtable discussions, recreation, and music by Kansas Wesleyan professors. A picnic dinner is planned and all are invited.

He notes dismounting 12 inch mortars for use in France, training in infantry and artillery, and hopes to reach France within four months. He recounts a Mother’s Day meal, praises U S government and officers, mentions a ball game against a Japanese team, a prank with a late riser, and daily inspections. he ends with relief at army life and a grim wish to join earlier.
