Reform zeal harms food supply in cautious industry caution

Wrong Feeding Methods

An old tale warns against improper feeding practices. A ship captain uses a medicine chest tale shows a sailor mixing No 40 strychnine with No 1 carbolic acid to create No 47 and dies. The point is that feeding errors arise from experimenting with rations, risking overdose or underdose and harm to livestock.

Difficulty Mixing Feeds Highlights Need for Standards

An article argues that mixing straight by products like oats, barley, rye, corn, and seeds is unreliable without laboratory testing. It notes past fraud and poor quality, praises government and state station efforts, and cites practical savings from using mill-made feeds. It also compares feed mixing to art and fertilizer practices, warning home mixing is inefficient and inconsistent. A practical test claims eight tons of dairy feed can replace 13 1/3 tons of farm grain, saving about 20 per ton and returning three times more fertilizer to the farm.

Double Duty A Dairy Ration For Life And Product

A dairy ration split into two parts keeps cattle alive and boosts output. Milk solids include casein, fat, and sugar, with casein requiring protein in the diet. A balanced ration provides exact protein, fat, and carbohydrates for each cow, varying weekly and by individual. Protein feeds cost more than hay, and war prices have raised feeds to about $40 per ton versus $10 for clover hay.

Different Feeds for Dairy Cows Rely on Judgment

The article notes feeds vary in nutritive value and cows differ in digestion. It advises using a solid base stock feed plus home-grown roughage and stresses not blindly following others' suggestions.

Concentrates for Rations for Dairy Cows

A guide lists seven factors for ration planning: bulk, digestibility, protein to carbs balance, variety, suitability to animal and product, palatability, and cost. It proposes a mix of grains at current prices: 600 distillers dried grains, 400 gluten feed, 300 wheat bran or brewers dried, 300 hominy feed, 300 cottonseed meal.

Salt for Cattle and Dairy Feed Economics

Practical dairy guidance notes salt requirements for cattle by weight and milk output. It emphasizes providing extra salt, the cost advantages of carload feed orders, the impact of freight on dealer margins, and warns against overfeeding which can harm profits. It also mentions water intake affecting production and the human element in dairy feed decisions.
