Fred 8. Kessler of Wa-Keeney, number 258, was the first name drawn from the glass urn in the Washington lottery. He is a young farmer living a few miles northwest of the city and will appear before the county examining board.
The county prints the names of 49 draftees selected to appear for examination for service in the United War effort. The lengthy list includes residents such as Ressler Wa-Keeney, Wahlberg Oxgall, Kraut Collyer, Dietz Wa-Keeney, Rourke McCracken, Harvey Banner, Malinowsky Collyer, Bennett Wa-Keeney, DeMurry Ogallah, Buchholz Gallah, Bowman Wa-Keeney, Morton Zeman, Ash Palco, Lamb Bosna, and Holmes Ransom, among others, with many entries from Wa-Keeney, Collyer, Banner, Ellis, Ogallah, and Banner.
The Wa Keeney chautauqua opens Sunday with lectures by Ren J G Camp and Pete A Boyl, among others. Camp recalls past talks and remarks on reputation versus character while noting limited attendance, and Merritte Driver stands out among the twenty four performers, many appearing for the first time in Wa Keeney.
McNeal recounts Wa Kee Fourth of July, praising Western Kansas crowds, but notes 4000 to 5000 listened calmly to speeches and there was no intoxication. He recalls wheat prosperity, then crop failure, the I W W incident in Wa Kee, and failed forestry stations. He surveys local leaders, climate, and prairie resilience with reflections on county trees, courthouses, and water needs.
The annual picnic in Purinton grove near Banner drew the largest crowd yet, with about 550 autos bringing roughly 2000 people. Highlights included patriotic music, a dinner, speeches by Hon. A. M. Keene, and a Utica vs Quinter baseball game ending 9 to 5 in Utica’s favor. Weather was pleasant, and plans aim for an even bigger event next year with continued county-wide participation.
