State Conventions Highlight Kansas County Supervisors Meeting
Sixty of one hundred five Kansas county superintendents attended the convention in Manhattan. State Superintendent Ross led sessions on school supervision while papers on home work, certification, common school law, and community welfare topics sparked discussion. Dr. Henry Sutzailo of Columbia University spoke on societal ills and schooling’s role, praising reform and urging action, with emphasis on tailoring training to each child. The Agricultural College provided field trips, and plans to revise course of study for city and country schools were announced for September. Miss Anna E. Arnold, Democratic candidate for State Superintendent, attended. Funding for institutes emerged as a major issue, with calls to empower counties to fund institutes. Western and eastern counties’ conditions were noted as distinct. Examinations for common schools followed the western model, with proposed shift to Thursdays and separate exams for different month-length schools. Former State Superintendent Fairchild, visiting from New Hampshire, contrasted wheat farming scales. Weather and other notices followed.

Wheat stubble handling to prepare seed bed in western Kansas
In western Kansas after a heavy wheat crop, experts advise not burning the tall stubble but delaying deep plow work. Instead double disk the land when moist, then sow wheat later, or plant sorghum if stubble is very heavy. Fall disking and winter plowing with sorghum crops may guarantee a crop. An egg car demo by USDA and Kansas State College will visit Wa Keeney on July 27 to teach proper egg handling.
