High School Notes from January 1913 Rural School

Notes report Ruth and Mary Olsen enrolling January 29 1913 and the six day week progress. The boys beat Ellis High School 40 to 17 in a recent game while rules against dogs at school are stated by Domestic Science girls. Attendance remains good despite snow and poor roads. Late arrival and tardiness noted, with remarks on loyalty and study effort. Semester exams annoyed some, and ads mention fresh beef and money to loan via E D Wheeler.

Death of Civil War veteran F C Schwanbeck

Frederick Carl Schwanbeck a long time Trego County settler and Civil War veteran died recently, leaving a widow six children twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was born March 25 in Trego County and was a German Lutheran. funeral held January 23 at Collyer with many from Wa-Keeney attending. article notes his devotion to right and kindness and outlines family. John Shenbrenner butchered hogs with J E Richardson aiding Hancock’s ice house work on Monday. Ruth Hancock suffers a sore throat. J W France and wife visited Groban, county, to see their son-in-law C W, and the 4 year old son, Sears, was mentioned amid miscellaneous household items.

The Parent Teachers Association will meet at the school house Friday afternoon February 1 1918 at 4 00. Arkansas woman wins promissory notes suit

Miss A D Beem of Sulphur Springs Ark won a federal jury verdict for 15283 against W R West of Manhattan connected with a Kansas City street railway. The suit alleged promissory notes linked to business deals and investments, and Beem once owned a large hotel at Hapthine Springs destroyed by fire.
