The Trego County Farmers Institute met at the courthouse on November 22 and 23 to carry out the program planned by the executive board and state secretary. Talks covered fruit culture, gardening unions, farm home appeal, soil moisture, wheat varieties, early or late planting, and corn raising. About twenty farmers attended Thursday and Friday, with discussions on seed, plowing, and farming practices.
Postmaster General orders box rent be collected at quarter starts with a ten day reminder before each quarter end. If a boxholder does not renew by the last day of a quarter, the box is closed and offered for rent, with mail moved to general delivery.
Correspondence notes a crowded Saturday in town with turkey races and social calls. John Razak brings home a fine phonograph from Ellis. Mrs. Bert Brown hosts Utah nieces, and schools may skip Thanksgiving vacation. St Michael's services December 2. December 7 UT W benefit looms. Miss E Cass wins a daily raffle.
Farmers husking corn continues with Kristoff Bros and Schwanbeck crews at work. Weather favors shelling and harvest. post office back in service, plans for new store by Wolff. Voda schoolhouse finished and praised, school to start December 10 with 24 pupils. local clerking at Wa Keeney Mercantile and Annie Thiel visits noted.
The week brings a quiet update noting J.B. Guilbert remains in poor condition with little improvement observed to date.
Miss Rose Biehler spent Thanksgiving at home. Miss Perri Hall visited Alma Courtney with Mrs Hattie Larrabee from Wa-Keeney. The North Downer ring played the South Downer pick-ups Friday. Boswaites attended the Big Creek ball. Mrs D Smith and mother of Wa Keeney visited Mrs J Biebler. Ida Courtney and Mrs Simpson of Banner visited Mrs Stella Yewell Sunday. J K Biebler and family and Wm Stimuts spent Thanksgiving at Ernest Jesse's in Stockrange.
State canvassing board tally confirms Hoch leading with about 35 thousand votes. Chief Justice Johnston tops others with 40,945. Denton 25,790. Fitzgerald 26,273. Populists and Socialists show smaller and third-party gains. Prohibition candidate Gilliam 7,621. Keefer 1,131. local ads note DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve and Hardman Lumber Co. offerings.
Government thermometer at Wa-Keeney records a cool week with little rain. Highs and lows were around 36 degrees for the period, signaling continued chilly conditions through the week.
Captain Trego Post No 197 G A R members urged to attend the December 8 1906 meeting for officer elections and other matters. Commander W C Onson asks every member to be present. Also listed is the Trego County Teachers association program for December 15 at 2 pm with music roll call quotations lesson in literature paper and address by A S Peacock noting secretary RoKER.
