Six more cars of steel for the Columbia river bridge arrived last night over the Great Northern bringing total on the ground to eighteen. Additional cars arrive daily as workers prepare for construction and a cable is strung across the river to carry steel for the other half of the bridge.
In Waterville on March 2 about six buyers attended the land sale of state granted property. Three bidders sold over 3000 acres. W. B. Stratton of Seattle and F. G. McIntosh of South Bend together bought 2240 acres for 20400 with improvements valued at 7030. Charles P. Richardson of Spokane bought 1250 acres for 15280, paying 11.50 and 12 per acre for two sections. improvements on Richardson’s parcel are appraised at 1505. The land lies in one tract twenty miles southeast of Waterville.
The Graves newspaper bill restricting publication of certain classes of matter failed in the senate by 15 to 25. Graves spoke at length advocating passage while few opposed it. Senator Ruth changed his vote and signaled a move to reconsider. Those voting for the bill were Blair Boone Booth Brown Cotterill Graves Gunn McGahan Metcalf Minkler Nichols Polson Presley Rosenhaupt and Veness.
Those who voted against the measure were Allen Anderson Bratt Condon Davis Eidemiller Hunter Hutson Jones Kennedy Kline Knickerbocker McGregor Paulhamus Pauly Piper Potts Rands Reed Ruth who changed his vote Scott Smith Stevenson Sumner Williams. Wenatchee Milling Co. plans to ship 1000 barrels of Wenatchee flour to South America next month, with another car headed for Los Angeles. The southern market is a new avenue for the region’s flour, while the Orient market remains well established with Washington mills exporting there.
Over 200 people crowded the army hall last night for an Interesting Service with Adjutant Storey’s songs and humor. Tonight’s meeting moves to the Opera House thanks to Manager Ferguson and Captain Jenkins, who expect a full house after many were turned away.
A pleasant surprise party was held on Aubrey Patterson at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fenton Tuesday evening. Pleasant games were played until eight thirty followed by delicious refreshments. J B Olinger, longtime manager of the Wenatchee Valley Fruit Growers Association, resigns and departs in days for Puyallup to take the manager post at the Sumter and Puyallup Valley Fruit Growers Association. W H Paulhamus, noted horticulturist, continues active management of his interests. Olinger has spent two years in the Wenatchee valley and is regarded as competent in his field.
Fruit growers from throughout the state organized the Federation of Washington Fruit Growers at a meeting in Seattle. The group aims to keep prices stable and prevent overstocking through controlled shipments. C. E. Cline of Lynden was elected chairman and Ben Harrison of East Sound secretary to lead the coming season.
Representative Cushman selected to deliver the principal presentation speech when Charles Grosvenor of Ohio retires after 20 years in the House. Cushman to Iowa, then Chicago. other congressmen and senators plan Panama and broader travels.
D W Boyington prepares to start a large plowing project at Irby on a tract owned by the Babcock Correspondence land company. He bought three teams harnesses and wagons from Wenatchee Plowing Mills and heads to Irby, then to Leavenworth for lumber hauling for Wenatchee Planing Mills from their sawmill on Chumstick creek to the railroad.
