Mayor Schmitz Found Guilty of Extortion in Frisco
In San Francisco on June 14 a twelve juror panel convicted Mayor Eugene E. Schmitz of extortion. The verdict followed a one hour thirty five minute deliberation after an initial split vote. Judge Dunne set sentencing for June 27 and ordered the defendant taken into custody pending the sentence. Abe Ruef earlier pleaded guilty, linking graft to Schmitz and Ruef’s factional power.
