A westbound freight derailed after a slide three miles above Leavenworth. Engine and cars plunged into the Wenatchee river. fireman Clyde Cahale is missing and presumed dead. Engineer McKay survived. The wreck delayed east and westbound trains for hours.
Pacific Coast company reports ample coal for the season with no delay to steam ships. Nome liners yet to secure fuel for the northern voyage. Vessels coaling at Tacoma and in harbor. Roslyn bunkers supplying many Sound steamers. Rosyth district mines contract to ship about 200 tons daily. Roslyn output boosted by Patrick & McKay Co arrangements.
Entiat ferry broke loose while laden with live sheep and sped downstream through rapids and logs. The steamer Chelan diverted and towed the ferry to safety. one ram sparked a brief scare by leaping overboard but all others were saved.
Reports from Rock Island rapids describe wreckage of the steamer Pringle piled on rocks in the river. A hull fragment seen from trains is all that remains of the vessel once on the Columbia. The Pringle broke moorings, drifted past Wenatchee, then struck rocks under the new bridge alignment.
Special to the Daily World from Spokane June 4 reports Odd Fellows delegates from Washington towns filling the city for a large parade and ceremonies at Natatorium park. Rebekahs also confer degrees on five women. A later tale notes a bicycle crash and a stray dog incident.
The two special coaches sit on the G. N. siding while Baptists known as Dunkards fill city streets. They wander without neckties, admiring the burg and querying land prices under the guidance of Max Bass, A. B. Peters, and Gensinger the Land Man. The trio hopes to lure visitors to settle in the valley.
