First Phone Order Practice Introduced at Local Station
The passenger station office dispatched its first train orders by telephone yesterday afternoon, marking a shift from telegraph use. Norris W Acker, a local operator, issued the inaugural orders for the Troy Matana to Leavenworth line as other eastern divisions adopt the system. Peter McGill cautioned that telegraph operators will remain essential for contingencies, but the new method promises safer operations with high quality wire and emergency messaging, enabling trains to run where telegraph service is unavailable.
