Surface Highway 138 progress in Texas Oklahoma line area

State highway 138 is being hard surfaced from the Texas Oklahoma line toward highway four. About seven miles of crushed limestone base are completed and 125 workers place 1200 cubic yards of rock daily when weather allows. Contractors are Bell and Braden of Amarillo and finishing by mid August with labor needed for cement handling.

Dr Hugo Echner veteran German aviation expert testified before the Senate Military Affairs Committees in Washington pleading for release of American owned helium for use in Nazi dirigibles. He warned lighter than air craft are doomed without it.

Opal Boutcher Returns From Abilene Christian College

Miss Opal Boutcher of Wellington returned home from Abilene Christian College at the end of the thirty first session. She completed the Freshman class course. President James F. Cox said the year saw record attendance, improvements in facilities, and strong student teacher cooperation.

New Texts Adopted for County Schools

Logan Cummings, County Superintendent, reports 2500 pounds of old school books were shipped last week to be replaced with new texts. The replacements aim to improve social studies with government and geography content and include arithmetics, physiology, readers, a dictionary, and language texts for grades three through seven and high school. Books expected by August 15 will be renovated where possible for distribution to Negro schools. Synthetic fatty acids for soap are being produced from coal in Germany.

The Samnorwood Chapter of the Future Farmers of America and adult education classes report substantial farm and community progress over two years.
