Mrs. O B Raburn died unexpectedly at 10 15 p m Wednesday June 8 in an Amarillo hospital. She was 76 and had broken her right leg in a fall May 29. For 45 years she and her husband ran a Wellington grocery. She served First Baptist Church and Wellington Schools and later focused on town beautification with the Wellington Garden Club.
Wellington hosts a three night rodeo at the VFW Arena from June 16 to 18 with 7 jackpot events each night. Cowboys from the Panhandle Eastern New Mexico and Southwestern Oklahoma compete alongside a large parade, dances, a beef barbecue, and stock by Bill Halliday. Advance tickets are $2 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.
The Wellington School Board tentatively approved a $545 444 building and remodeling program after long discussions with architect Tom Brown. Key contracts include Speed Fab Crete for general work at 460 704 and separate flooring 11 493, with other trades and fees totaling funds for renovations and new classrooms. The board also approved depository bids, and accepted resignations while hiring new custodians and bus drivers for next year.
The Commissioners Court approved a consolidated Law Enforcement program worth 129 923 dollars for 14 months to align with the county fiscal year. Judge Hartman spoke of a jointly used airplane purchased for 360 dollars from a state program, flown in from Anahuac and in good condition. The court tabled bids on lowering the district court ceiling and on air conditioning, with alternate plans to preserve ceiling decoration and improve acoustics.
First United Methodist Church holds its third annual beef barbecue on Saturday June 18 at Ellison Park during Wellington's rodeo week. About 600 servings expected with 100 rodeo performers and visitors. tickets are $3.00.
Riders will parade through Wellington's downtown at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday June 18 as part of the big rodeo events. Organized by Mrs. Edd Howard the event features real cow horses and experienced riders in what may be the largest horse gathering in years. spectators urged to watch or ride if they own a horse.
Five business leaders are named as nominees for the C-C Board, signaling organizational plans and leadership slate.
City manager Glen Taylor and Chamber of Commerce director Bob Watson described Wellington Clarendon Memphis and Silverton airport needs at a Friday FAA meeting in Clarendon. Watson cited Southwest Bell Products plant, Hay Camp country club, and ambulance aircraft for joint city county use. two pilots volunteered to fly as needed.
