A dated log from 1608 recounts a mermaid seen near the ship in latitude 25 7 N, with witnesses Thomas Hiter and Robert Rayner describing a white, black-haired figure whose tail resembled a porpoise. The tale joins many long-believed sea myths and superstitions.
The Titanic tragedy of April 14 1912 spurred an international ice patrol to locate icebergs in North Atlantic lanes during late spring and early summer. Ten nations fund the effort and the US Coast Guard cutters operate from Halifax sending iceberg sightings by radio to vessels in the danger zone. Captains of ships from many nations cooperate by reporting ice conditions.
The ice patrol reports iceberg sightings broadcast by radio twice daily. In twenty years since its founding there has been no loss of life or ship damage from iceberg collisions, a noteworthy safety record for the fleet.
A national conference on street and highway safety in Washington urged uniform traffic regulations across the country. Debates focused on speed limits with a proposal of twenty miles per hour in business and residential areas, fifteen near intersections and schools, urging rigid enforcement and broad support for nationwide consistency.

Purchaser to receive deed and possession within 30 days of sale.

Aduddell and daughters visited Swearingen with their daughter and sister Sunday. Grandma Johnson visits her son Jeff Johnson this week. John Clement saw Frank Sturgell Sunday. A L Stafford and sons Clifton and Jack joined G. T. Aduddell Sunday afternoon. Edwin Aduddell is listed sick this week. Mrs. Earl A Reed and her little daughter from Borger spent the weekend with family. Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Ahuddell left for a visit in Lubbock Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Brown of Town wed in Hollis last Saturday. Mrs. Brown spent the weekend with Barbara and Norma Jean.

Pope Pious Wednesday marked his seventy sixth birthday with a large turnout of pilgrims at the Vatican. He received hundreds of visitors during the celebration in St. Peter's Square and surrounding areas.
The elderly pope marked the holy year by attending audiences from morning to evening. He offered a low mass of thanksgiving in his private chapel and spoke briefly with distant relatives afterward. Messages of congratulations arrived from royalty, statesmen, bishops, and notable laymen.
